Keep These Tips Handy As You Begin Your Home Improvement ...

TIP! Even a novice at home improvements can fix a leaky faucet. When you can deal with the issue quickly, you?ll save on your water bill.

Have you tried and succeeded at home improvement before? Have you had a lot of success with fixing up your home in the past? Try reading these tips to increase your knowledge.

TIP! Build an inventory of common hardware like screws, nails and fasteners. If you do this, you won?t have to search for what you need when you are trying to complete a project, fix something or hang those family photos.

Put in a backer board of cement when installing tile anywhere there is moisture. The cement will block the moisture, preventing it from damaging the drywall. When water interacts with the dry wall, damaging mold and mildew can form on the wall.

TIP! Thinking of home improvement as a money sink is a narrow view. In reality, you?re spending money now to save money later.

Take care to confirm that your contractor has listened to your instructions. It is much easier to voice your concerns or see your vision put into play when you have a contractor whom you consider trustworthy. An inattentive contractor may not complete the job as you intended. So do whatever you need to do so that the contractor actually ?hears? what you are asking for.

TIP! Be sure to include a window or other ventilation mechanism with any improvements to your bathroom. Humidity can cause a lot of damage to a bathroom.

Make sure any contractor you deal with is licensed by your state. You c an find out via your state government site or phone. An unlicensed contractor may have issues that prevent them from having a current license.

TIP! Work on painting the room before you make any other improvements. It is a lot easier to paint before the floor is installed.

A fun home improvement project is to add a bar to a basement space. The task of designing, building and drinking at a bar is a project that everyone will enjoy doing. Whatever way someone chooses to do it, creating a bar can be a great improvement.

TIP! After seven years, it may be in your best interest to upgrade or replace your central heating and air unit. Newer models are all made to higher standards, which means they use far less electricity in order to operate.

Remember that you can never eyeball angles, measurements, or leveling to guess at them when woodworking. Essential tools for good woodworking results are your speed square, level, and tape measure.

TIP! When it comes to home improvement, don?t go it alone! Some projects can be undertaken with help from the entire family?even young children. For example, some simple painting, planting a garden, hanging artwork, etc, are all home improvement projects that you can complete as a family.

Don?t allow contractors to stain your budget by telling you that they?ll have the job done unusually quick. A contractor might have reasons to want to do the job quickly. They probably want to rush the jobs to spend time on other jobs. But this can be harmful to your budget if they try to charge for overtime work.

TIP! If you are needing a new roof, consider using white tile or shingles to replace the old roof. Using dark colored tile can cause an attic to become hot.

Gaining knowledge of home improvement takes time no matter how good you are at handy projects. There is always more to learn, whether it is new tricks or building skills. You are sure to find many great ways to use the above advice.

Businesses that fail to support team working risk drop in productivity

By On-Rec at 30 January, 2013, 9:46 am

  • 37% of UK workers prefer working on their own to being part of a team
  • 47% say their organisation does not help them develop good team working practices
  • 33% have regularly dreaded coming into work as the result of a bad team environment
    ?

Nearly half (47%) of UK employees feel that their organisation does not help them to develop good team working practices, according to new research released today (30 January 2013) by coaching, leadership and talent development experts, Cedar.?

In addition, more than a third (37%) of UK employees prefer to work on their own, suggesting that many business cultures do not encourage employees to communicate ideas, share responsibility and trust fellow team members.

Despite the importance of employees understanding how their own work contributes to team targets, one in five respondents (22%) said they had never been in a meeting at which team performance was discussed.

Penny de Valk, chief executive of Cedar, said: ?We know that high performing organisations have high performing teams, and so businesses should look at ways of developing better, more productive team working within their organisations. A lack of adequate training and support for effective team working has a potentially damaging knock-on effect on business productivity.?

?We were concerned by research results that suggested UK employees do not feel well supported by team mates, with 54% saying their biggest timewaster was sloppy work that needed re-doing. For teams to work efficiently and happily together, every person must be equipped and motivated to pull their weight.?

The results also suggest that there is room for improvement in the skills of team leaders. 42% of respondents highlighted ?having a team leader who does not assist in resolving conflicts? as having a damaging effect on team performance.?? A further 42% indicated a lack of trust between team members as a key detrimental factor.?

Difficult inter-personal relationships within teams had a marked impact on productivity, with a third (33%) of respondents having regularly dreaded coming into work as the result of a bad team environment, whilst a further 29% said they couldn?t do their job properly.

Penny de Valk continued: ?Team Leaders play a vital role in delivering organisational performance, while their style and effectiveness has an impact on their team?s ability to deliver successfully.? It is a difficult role and people should be supported to develop the right skills and techniques to ensure they are able to get the most out of their teams.

?This requires a savvy, influential leadership style to get all members of the team focussed on team goals, as well as awareness of their position as a role model. Team leaders need to ensure that their staff have a clear understanding of their own responsibilities, and an overview of how these fit into the bigger picture in terms of team goals.? Regular meetings to discuss team performance, alongside opportunities to socialise as a team, create the right atmosphere for team productivity.?

FCC filing reveals Apple TV model A1469 with slightly smaller dimensions

Apple TV clears the FCC,

We don't generally find surprises from Apple in the daily stream of FCC documents and test reports, but a new filing published today seems to suggest that a new Apple TV model of some sort could be on the way. While the diagram pictured above doesn't suggest any major changes to the device's appearance, it does list some slightly smaller measurements: 93.78mm square compared to the 98mm of the current model. That's certainly not the biggest of differences, but the measurements in previous Apple FCC filing have been spot on. The model number, A1469, is also one that we haven't seen before, but the documents unfortunately don't offer much else in the way of details (only confirmation of the same WiFi capabilities as the current-gen Apple TV).

As MacRumors noted yesterday, a look at the download options for the latest Apple TV software update also revealed a new "AppleTV3,2" model, which it speculated could be an international version of the device -- although it of course remains to be seen if it and this model are one in the same. For now, you can get a closer look at the filing yourself at the source link.

(AP) ? A soldier who lost all four limbs in a roadside bombing in Iraq says he's looking forward to driving and swimming with new arms after undergoing a double-arm transplant.

"I just want to get the most out of these arms, and just as goals come up, knock them down and take it absolutely as far as I can," Brendan Marrocco said Tuesday.

The 26-year-old New Yorker spoke at a news conference at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he was joined by surgeons who performed the operation.

After he was wounded, Marrocco said, he felt fine using prosthetic legs, but he hated not having arms.

"You talk with your hands, you do everything with your hands, basically, and when you don't have that, you're kind of lost for a while," he said.

Marrocco said his chief desire is to drive the black Dodge Charger that's been sitting in his garage for three years.

"I used to love to drive," he said. "I'm really looking forward to just getting back to that, and just becoming an athlete again."

Although he doesn't expect to excel at soccer, his favorite sport, Marrocco said he'd like to swim and compete in a marathon using a handcycle.

Marrocco joked that military service members sometimes regard themselves as poorly paid professional athletes. His good humor and optimism are among the qualities doctors cited as signs he will recover much of his arm and hand use in two to three years.

"He's a young man with a tremendous amount of hope, and he's stubborn ? stubborn in a good way," said Dr. Jaimie Shores, the hospital's clinical director of hand transplantation. "I think the sky's the limit."

Shores said Marrocco has already been trying to use his hands, although he lacks feeling in the fingers, and he's eager to do more as the slow-growing nerves and muscles mend.

"I suspect that he will be using his hands for just about everything as we let him start trying to do more and more. Right now, we're the ones really kind of holding him back at this point," Shores said.

The procedure was only the seventh double-hand or double-arm transplant ever done in the United States.

The infantryman was injured by a roadside bomb in 2009. He is the first soldier to survive losing all four limbs in the Iraq War.

Marrocco also received bone marrow from the same donor to minimize the medicine needed to prevent rejection. He said he didn't know much about the donor but "I'm humbled by their gift."

The 13-hour operation on Dec. 18 was led by Dr. W.P. Andrew Lee, plastic surgery chief at Hopkins.

Marrocco was being released from the hospital Tuesday but will receive intensive therapy for two years at Hopkins and then at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda.

After a major surgery, human nerves regenerate at a rate of an inch per month, Lee said.

"The progress will be slow, but the outcome will be rewarding," he added.

How to start a business | Business branding for beginners

Strong ideas are the starting point of any successful business, but if you want to take it further you?ll need to learn how to brand your business. As part of our series on ?How to Start a Business?, ?Joanne Dewberry, Sage Business Expert,?and owner of Charlie Moo?s explains how you can use branding to improve your business.?

Joanne Dewberry

Branding isn?t just about having a fabulous logo ? you have to consider every aspect, including yourself.? Ensure you work with colours, styles and themes which you can easily use over the various aspects of your business to provide consistence.? Branding should encompass your whole business, including your ethos, core values and mission statement. Ultimately, when a customer sees your brand, what key things do you want to spring to mind?

The story of Moo

The name ?Charlie Moo?s? developed from my son ? Charlie. We have referred to him as ?Moo? since he was a baby. Obviously, Moo lends itself quite nicely to the cow imagery. My friend came up with the concept of the cow being the letter M and it works on so many levels:

  • As a full banner using the whole name or just using the M cow as a stand-alone logo, which does not look out of place and is still distinctly Charlie Moo?s. The style of the M cow also lent itself nicely to being transformed into both my girl cows, Megan and Olive.
  • These stand-alone cow images work well as images on cake toppers, my popular range of wrapping paper and other products. For the Royal Wedding in April 2011, I used Charlie and Megan Moo adorned with crowns on a backdrop of the Union Jack. For Easter I have them wearing bunny masks. All quirky, unique and distinct. This enabled me to keep my branding consistent but also topical, seasonal and fresh.
  • I also ensure that each bag I make has a label sewn inside it, a swing tag attached to the handle with string made from an image of one of our party bags, and I pop a business card inside too. That way, when each child that leaves a party with one of my handmade fabric bags,? they ? or, more importantly, their parents ? know where the bag came from.

Get professional help

When creating visual materials, you need to take all aspects of the design into consideration; fonts, colours, and how the logo will work alongside your existing designs or packaging.

This is an important aspect of your business so if you?re not a graphic designer then employ someone to help you. Our original logo was designed in the basic MS Paint program and was incredibly square and pixelated. We got a graphic designer on board to smooth it all out and make it more visually appealing, which instantly changed the whole appearance of my website and has since paved the way for Megan and Olive Moo. These high-quality images could then also be easily used on branded items such as wrapping paper and cake toppers.

Ask your audience

Before you spend any money on logos, business cards, leaflets, web design, etc., it is really useful to get other people?s opinions; whether it?s via people you?ve done business with before or through social media such as Twitter. Try to avoid?just?asking family members as they will have a tendency to give a positive appraisal rather than the constructive criticism you need. Developing a brand is not an easy process, but once it is right you?ve then got to reinforce it in everything you say and do. It inevitably encompasses everything about you and what your business does.

Tooth development and weaning in chimpanzees not as closely related as once thought

Jan. 28, 2013 ? For more than two decades, scientists have relied on studies that linked juvenile primate tooth development with their weaning as a rough proxy for understanding similar developmental landmarks in the evolution of early humans. New research from Harvard, however, is challenging those conclusions by showing that tooth development and weaning aren't as closely related as previously thought.

Using a first-of-its-kind method, a team of researchers led by professors Tanya Smith and Richard Wrangham and Postdoctoral Fellow Zarin Machanda of Harvard's Department of Human Evolutionary Biology used high-resolution digital photographs of chimps in the wild to show that after the eruption of their first molar tooth, many juvenile chimps continue to nurse as much, if not more, than they had in the past. Their study is described in a January 28 paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"When these earlier studies were published about 20 years ago, they found a very tight relationship between the eruption of the first molar and certain developmental milestones, particularly weaning," Smith explained. "A number of researchers have tried to extrapolate that relationship to the human fossil record, but it now appears that our closest living relative doesn't fit that pattern. That suggests we should be more cautious if we want to infer what juvenile hominins were like."

Getting an inside view of chimpanzee childhood, however, is no easy task.

Most prior studies of tooth development in juvenile chimps relied on two methods of collecting data -- observing captive animals or studying skeletal remains of wild primates. Both, however, also came with challenges for researchers.

Studies have shown that captive chimps grow dramatically faster -- often reaching adult size by age 10 or 11, compared to 13 to 15 for wild chimps. That early development means the milestones researchers rely on as proxies for understanding early human species likely occur earlier than they normally would. Researchers studying skeletal remains of wild primates face a similar challenge. To properly understand those developmental landmarks, remains must be properly identified and aged, a notoriously difficult process for primates in dense tropical forests.

To solve those problems, Smith, Wrangham and Machanda developed a unique method for studying juvenile chimps in the wild. Researchers studying the Kanyawara chimpanzee community in Kibale National Park in Uganda teamed up with wildlife photographers who snapped photos of juvenile chimp's teeth whenever they opened their mouths. The detailed photos, some of which captured the same individuals over months, allowed researchers to track precisely when molars erupted, and to correlate that information with chimp's behavior more closely than ever before.

What the images revealed, Smith and Machanda said, came as a surprise.

Where earlier studies suggested that juvenile primates were weaned shortly after their first molar erupts, their study showed that, in addition to eating more solid food, chimps continued to "suckle as much, if not more, than they had before," Smith said. "They were showing adult-like feeding patterns while continuing to suckle, which was unexpected."

While questions of why juvenile chimps continue to nurse -- in some cases for months -- have yet to be answered, Machanda said those questions will likely be the subject of future studies.

"We're now working on a project that's focused on body size and growth, but we're also planning future studies that will look at their energetic condition so we can understand what they're trying to get from the mother by continuing to nurse," she said. "What's interesting, however, is that there can be conflict surrounding this where the juveniles are trying to get as much as possible from the mother and the mother is actually covering up her nipples and moving around. Sometimes they'll even throw these temper tantrums that look exactly like human babies."

"I think there are two bottom lines here," Smith said. "One, I think, is a cautionary tale. The findings in this paper are going to challenge us to find other proxies for weaning and the spacing between offspring, but the other aspect that's exciting is that we have some suggestion that we should start looking at how feeding behaviors develop in the wild.

"No one has looked at how infants become more adult-like, both in their food choice and in the time they spend feeding," she continued. "This actually appears to correlate fairly well with dental development, so, while this is a preliminary finding, we may have a new anatomical proxy for when juvenile primates begin eating like adults."

The Olympic torch was brought to Sligo by the Irish Sports Council Sports Partnership Officer Michelle Harte, who was a special guest at the event.

Five primary schools, Our Lady of Mercy P.S, St Edward?s N.S, St Brendan?s N.S, St John?s School and Sligo School Project took part in the Mini Olympics. Children at each school received coaching sessions in preparation for the event. Each school represented a country at the Mini Olympics and developed its own flags and banners for the event.

The young athletes took part in hurdles, speed bounce, javelin, hammer, long jump and rebounder relays in mixed teams with pupils from other schools, without the focus of competition.

?Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership were delighted to have Michelle Harte from the Irish Sports Council as our special guest. The Olympic Games are the world?s greatest multi-cultural sporting spectacle and are a means to inspire, stimulate and promote positive messages and good practice through sport,? said Diane Middleton of Sligo Sports and Recreation Partnership. For further information on this initiative please contact Diane Middleton, Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership on 071-9161511 or email diane@sligosportandrecreation.ie.

WindowsAndroid runs Google's mobile OS natively on the Windows kernel

Sure, you could enjoy Android on your PC through dual-booting or virtualization, but the folks at Socketeq have whipped up yet another alternative: a port of Mountain View's mobile OS, fittingly dubbed WindowsAndroid, that runs natively on the Windows kernel (under Vista, 7 and 8) instead of Linux. Not only does the operating system run speedily since its free of virtualization chains, but it serves up the appropriate tablet or smartphone UI based on window size, and plays nice with keyboards and mice, to boot. Socketeq's solution serves up the full Android experience, but you'll have to separately flash the Google apps that typically come baked in, according to Android Police. Ice Cream Sandwich is the freshest flavor of Android to have undergone the kernel-replacement treatment, and it's currently being offered as a free "first-try" download at the source.

Roadside bomb kills 10 in Afghanistan

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) ? A police truck packed with officers and detainees struck a roadside bomb in southern Afghanistan's largest city, killing 10 of those aboard, officials said Sunday.

It was one of four blasts Saturday that left at least 24 people dead across the country. Attacks by insurgents are a daily occurrence around Afghanistan and the Afghan police with their unarmored pickup trucks and remote checkpoints are a common target.

In the Kandahar city blast, police had driven out into a residential neighborhood of the city at night to inspect a bomb that had been found there, said Javid Faisal, a spokesman for the provincial government. They detained three suspects and were driving back with them in a police pickup truck when the vehicle struck another explosive buried in the road. Eight police officers and two detainees were killed in the blast.

Meanwhile, Afghan authorities accused NATO of killing three civilian men in a nighttime ambush in the eastern Logar province. The coalition disputed the account, saying it had no operations in Logar's Baraki Barak district Saturday night. NATO said there were three dead, but they were insurgents killed by Afghan forces.

Deputy provincial police chief Rais Khan Abdul Rahimzai said all three of the added were civilians. "They were brothers. They had dinner at one of their brother's houses in another part of the district and it was when they were driving back that they were ambushed by the foreign soldiers," Rahimzai said. "It was a misunderstanding in which foreign forces shot and killed three people."

A spokesman for the international force disputed the Afghan version of the incident."This was the ANSF," said Maj. Martyn Crighton, referring to the Afghan National Security Forces. He said they went after three men who had been seen burying a bomb in the ground and "got engaged in a firefight with these guys."

It was not possible to reconcile the conflicting accounts.

Earlier Saturday, 10 policemen were killed when a suicide bomber on a motorcycle blew himself up in Kunduz province in the north. Meanwhile, a remote-controlled bomb planted on a bicycle exploded in the eastern city of Ghazni, killing one police officer and a civilian. And officials in Farah province in the west said Sunday that two police officers were killed there Saturday evening when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb.

High school teacher accused of having sex with student

By Pat Battle, NBCNewYork.com

A New Jersey high school teacher has been arrested for allegedly having a sexual relationship with a student, authorities said.

Jennalin Garcia-Calle, a 28-year-old algebra teacher at Plainfield High School, was arrested Thursday in Davie, Fla., and charged with second-degree sexual assault and fourth-degree child abuse.

According to prosecutors, Garcia-Calle began the relationship with the 16-year-old boy in December. Prosecutors allege that at least three sexual encounters occurred in a classroom inside the school.

"The boy is not at a stage in his life where he's able to make that type of legal and quite frankly mature enough decision," said Union County Prosecutor Theodore Romankow.

Authorities became aware of the alleged relationship after the student told a family member what had happened. Students at the high school said the boy also bragged about the relationship to classmates.

"They both knew what they were doing, they both knew they were wrong," said senior Imani Campbell.

Prosecutors said Garcia-Calle realized her relationship with the boy had been discovered, prompting her to check into a rehabilitation center in Florida, as well as send the boy messages asking him to erase certain evidence. U.S. marshalls traced those messages and arrested Garcia-Calle.

She is being held without bond in Florida, awaiting extradition to New Jersey.

The Plainfield Board of Education has placed Garcia-Calle on an administrative suspension.

Information on an attorney for Garcia-Calle was not immediately available.

Health answers sought about burned-off war garbage

WASHINGTON (AP) ? J.D. Williams didn't think much about the smoke cloud that often shrouded his air base in Iraq. Not when it covered everything he owned with black soot or when his wheezing and coughing made it difficult to sleep at night.

"We just went about our business because there was a war going on," said Williams, a retired chief warrant officer who was responsible for maintaining some 250 aircraft for the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division.

He returned home from that second stint in Iraq in 2006 and subsequently was diagnosed with an irreversible lung disease that his doctor suspects could be related to smoke from one of the hundreds of burn pits that dotted Iraq and Afghanistan during the course of the two wars. The pits were used to burn off the garbage that accumulates at military bases, everything from Styrofoam and metal to paints, solvents, human waste and medical waste.

A new Department of Veterans Affairs registry, mandated by Congress, will be used to try to determine if there is a link between the burn pits and long-term health problems.

Military personnel who were stationed near an open burn pit can sign up. Researchers will use the database to monitor health trends in participants, and the VA will alert them to major problems detected.

Over the long term, the findings could make it easier for veterans who served near burn pits to obtain disability payments.

Williams, 56, of Huntsville, Ala., was initially told that he would have to prove that his illness, diagnosed as constrictive bronchiolitis, was service-related. He walked out of the room. Eventually, after he traveled to Washington and met with members of Congress, the VA increased his disability rating 10 percent.

He said he's hoping the registry will pave the way for other soldiers to avoid a similarly exasperating process. If researchers find certain illnesses are linked to exposure to burn pits, then the VA would be more likely to declare those illnesses a presumptive condition, eliminating the need for a veteran to prove that his or her illness is service-related.

Sixty-three burn pits were still being used in Afghanistan as of Dec. 26; those in Iraq were closed by December 2010. Camps with fewer than 100 people are not required to report the use of a burn pit, so there could be more, but generally much smaller ones. Proponents say the burn pits were so widespread that the large majority of veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan could participate in the registry.

In 2009, the military updated its policies on burn pits to prohibit the burning of hazardous materials such as certain medical waste, batteries and tires, and whenever possible, to situate them where the smoke would not blow over work and living quarters.

"When our service members voice concerns about burn pit exposures as well as other health issues, we take our responsibility seriously to investigate these exposures and possible health risks, and to implement any protective measure that are indicated and feasible," said Defense Department spokeswoman Cynthia O. Smith.

The creation of the burn pit registry has been several years in the making.

Air Force Lt. Col Darrin Curtis said in a memo disclosed by the Army Times in 2008 that he believed a particularly large burn pit at Joint Base Balad, one of the largest air bases in Iraq, was an acute health hazard, and he was amazed that it was allowed to operate without restrictions.

Congressional hearings followed that featured sick veterans, contractors and family members who had lost a loved one from illnesses they attributed to burn pits. The Pentagon said that none of the monitoring conducted at Balad identified an increased risk for long-term health problems. It has maintained that position over the years but also acknowledges that some personnel have persistent symptoms, possibly as a result of elevated exposures to the smoke, existing health conditions or other unknown factors.

An Institute of Medicine study requested by the VA and made public in 2011 concluded there was insufficient data to determine whether burn pit emissions had long-term health consequences. The study found the pollutants measured at Balad were generally present at a concentration so low that it would not be expected to cause any harm, even if a person was exposed to that concentration for a lifetime. The two exceptions were particulate matter and acrolein.

Particulate matter is a mixture of small particles and liquid droplets that can lead to acute respiratory problems. But the high concentrations at Joint Base Balad came primarily from local sources such as traffic and dust storms, rather than the burn pit, according to the institute, which advises the government on health issues.

Acrolein is a liquid primarily used as a herbicide and in making other chemicals. Exposure can lead to eye, nose and throat irritation. Although the concentration exceeded precautionary levels set by the Environmental Protection Agency, it was still far below the concentration that led to nasal and lung damage in laboratory animals, the study said.

The Pentagon said it is continuing to study the potential hazards of burn pit exposure.

The VA opposed the legislation setting up the burn pit registry even though it has registries for those exposed to Agent Orange in Vietnam and for those who served during the Gulf War. The department did not oppose trying to track potential burn pit-related illnesses, just the mechanism proposed.

"We said it was not the best scientific approach for learning about long-term health outcomes and it really wasn't necessary for outreach because we have other programs in place," said Dr. Paul Ciminera, director of the VA's Post-9/11 Era Environmental Health Program.

As to whether the burn pits lead to health problems in soldiers, Ciminera cited the Institute of Medicine report. "We need to do further research to see what the long-term effects could be," he said.

Democratic Sen. Tom Udall of New Mexico, the lead Senate sponsor of the registry legislation, said he pushed ahead despite VA objections because the department seems to instinctively reject concerns that veterans are harmed by their surrounding environment. He cited Agent Orange as an example and said the VA initially resisted a link between the defoliant and the health of soldiers who served in Vietnam.

Many supporters of the registry, including Williams, are also participants in a class-action lawsuit filed against KBR Inc., which contracted with the government to operate several of the burn pits in Iraq and Afghanistan. Some 50 lawsuits were consolidated into one case in a Maryland federal court. The plaintiffs are seeking damages for various injuries, emotional distress and fear of future disease. KBR is seeking to dismiss the lawsuits on grounds it deserves the same immunity that prevents the plaintiffs from suing the federal government.

"Every type of waste imaginable was and is burned in these pits," the plaintiffs said in their suit.

Veterans groups were big backers of the registry, and an often-divided Congress overwhelmingly sides with them rather than the VA.

"You've been told since you're a little kid: 'Don't put a Styrofoam cup in a fire and breathe it because it's bad for you," said Ray Kelley, national legislative director for the Veterans of Foreign Wars. "They do that all day long on these stops along with Lord knows what else, from human waste to all sorts of garbage. You're inhaling that on a daily basis. It can't be good for you."

Health News - Researchers Identify Gene Linked to Progressive ...

An international team of researchers led by the Miller School?s Xue Zhong Liu, M.D., Ph.D., has identified the first gene to be associated with both noise-reduced and age-related hearing loss. The gene, P2X2, appears to be crucial to the preservation of life-long normal hearing and for protection against noise.

In the study published January 24 in the early online issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), Liu, associate professor and Director of Research in the Department of Otolaryngology, and his team found that a mutation in P2X2 increases the susceptibility to both age- and noise-related hearing loss associated with DFNA41, a form of progressive nonsyndromic hearing loss that begins early in life, often in adolescence, and progresses with age. Generally accompanied by high frequency tinnitus, high-pitched ringing in the ears, the hearing loss ranges from severe to profound over decades.

?Age-related hearing loss and noise-induced hearing loss are two of the most common morbidities in the world, affecting more than 500 million people, but virtually nothing is known of the genetics that underlies them,? said Liu, also an associate member of The John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics, which collaborated on the study. ?Our identification of the P2X2 gene as a factor in progressive hearing loss is the first step in understanding the genetic causes of both noise-induced and age-induced hearing loss.?

Funded by the NIH?s National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), the researchers specifically discovered that the P2X2 mutation found in DFNA41 results in defects in sensory hair cells in the inner ear, which eventually lead to ongoing hearing loss. The study establishes, at the cellular and molecular levels, that the function of this ion channel, previously known to be involved in sensory signaling and pain, has a major impact on noise-induced and age-related hearing loss.

?This is groundbreaking work,? said Miller School Dean Pascal J. Goldschmidt, M.D., who is also Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs. ?Not only does it give scientists a way to develop a targeted treatment for progressive hearing loss in humans with DFNA41, it also may open doors to the treatment of noise-induced and age-related hearing loss in the wider population.?

Noting that DFNA41is the first example of a human disease caused by a mutation in the P2X2 gene, Fred Telischi, M.D., Professor and Chair of Otolaryngology, said, ?The findings emphasize the importance of a genetic approach for uncovering hearing impairment related to noise exposure and aging.?

For the PNAS study, ?Mutation of the ATP-gated P2X2 receptor leads to progressive hearing loss and increased susceptibility to noise,? the researchers identified two Chinese families with DFNA41 and found that members of those families who carried the mutation and were exposed to noise as young adults had significantly poorer hearing at high frequencies than those without the mutation. Those without it had no hearing loss when exposed to noise.

Then the investigators manipulated human cells and mice to determine the role of the P2X2 in progressive hearing loss. They tested the effect of exposure to moderate noise ? levels within legally permissible limits for long-term human exposure ? on a group of normal wild mice and a group that had the gene deleted. They found that, when exposed to moderate continuous noise from birth to young adulthood (15 weeks), both the wild and knockout mice experienced hearing loss at the frequency (kHz) of exposure. However, in the knockout mice, hearing was significantly impacted not only at the exposed frequency, but at higher frequencies ? that is, across the entire hearing spectrum, which indicates noise as the cause for these losses.

Other Miller School researchers on the study included first author Denise Yan, Ph.D., research assistant professor of otolaryngology; Asli Sirmaci, Ph.D., a former post-doc at the Hussman Institute; Lilin Du, research associate, and M?hamed Grati, assistant scientist, both in the Department of Otolaryngology; Susan Halloran Blanton, Ph.D., Executive Director of the Hussman Institute and associate professor of human genetics; and Mustafa Tekin, M.D., associate professor of human genetics. International collaborators included clinical colleagues in China. Also contributing were Mary-Claire King and Tom Walsh at the University of Washington; Hongbo Zhao at the University of Kentucky; Bechara Kachar, M.D., chief of the NIDCD laboratory of cell structure and dynamics; Allen Ryan at the University of California San Diego; Zheng-yi Chen of Harvard Medical School; and Gary Housley and Peter Thorne of the Universities of New South Wales and Auckland, respectively.
