Italy's Rita Levi-Montalcini dies

The Italian Nobel prize-winning neurologist Rita Levi-Montalcini has died at the age of 103.

Dr Levi-Montalcini lived through anti-semitic discrimination under fascism to become one of Italy's top scientists and most respected figures.

She won acclaim for her work on cells, which furthered understanding of a range of conditions, including cancer.

In 1986 she shared the Nobel prize for medicine with biochemist Stanley Cohen for research carried out in the US.

Her niece, Piera Levi-Montalcini, told La Stampa newspaper that she had died peacefully "as if sleeping" after lunch.

Her aunt had continued to carry out several hours of research every day until her death, she said.

Rita Levi-Montalcini was born in 1909 to a wealthy Jewish family in the northern city of Turin, where she studied medicine.

But after she graduated in 1936 the fascist government banned Jews from academic and professional careers, and Dr Levi-Montalcini set up a makeshift laboratory in her bedroom, experimenting on chicken embryos.

"She worked in primitive conditions," Italian astrophysicist Margherita Hack told Italian TV. "She is really someone to be admired."

'Charismatic and tenacious'

Dr Levi-Montalcini's family lived underground in Florence after the Germans invaded Italy in 1943. She later worked as doctor for the allied forces that liberated the city, treating refugees.

At 100, I have a mind that is superior - thanks to experience - than when I was 20?

End Quote Rita Levi-Montalcini, interviewed in 2009

From 1947 she was based for more than 20 years in the US, at Washington University in Saint Louis, Missouri. There she discovered nerve growth factor, which regulates the growth of cells.

She later worked at the National Council of Scientific Research in Rome.

Her research was recognised to have advanced the understanding of conditions including tumours, malformations and senile dementia.

In 2001 she was nominated to the Italian upper house of parliament as a senator for life, an honour bestowed on some of Italy's most distinguished public figures.

She was an ambassador for the Rome-based UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, and founded the Levi-Montalcini Foundation, which carries out charity work in Africa.

Dr Levi-Montalcini never married, saying her life had been "enriched by excellent human relations, work and interests".

In a 2009 interview she said: "At 100, I have a mind that is superior - thanks to experience - than when I was 20."

Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti praised Dr Levi-Montalcini's "charismatic and tenacious" character and her lifelong battle to "defend the battles in which she believed".

Once in a Lifetime ? Real Estate Marketing Blog ? Real Pro Systems

Howard Brinton was one of those people who come along once in a lifetime.? His passing this past week from a long battle with prostate cancer is felt by the many who knew him, admired him, and loved him like family.? The world lost a pretty amazing man who taught an industry how to connect and share to grow in their businesses and in their lives.? Here at Real Pro Systems we feel that loss.? Many of our own are grieving this loss and here are a few words from them.

Rob Levy, Co-Founder of Real Pro Systems, Star Power Star: ??Howard, for those of you who don?t know, was indirectly a major catalyst of the formation of Real Pro Systems and to its beginning success as many of his students (including Galand Haas and I) are Howard Brinton?s Star Power Stars.? He provided real estate education and conferences taught by ?the stars?.? Real Pro Systems first really big sales were at one of those conferences.

Howard was a major influence in my business life from the first time I started listening to the cassettes (yes, cassettes back then) of top agents interviewed back in the very early ?90s.? I then started attending his conferences and learned much of how I run my real estate business from Howard and the stars.? Howard will be missed and is survived by his three children, his grandchildren and his wife Babs.

Galand Haas, Co-Founder of Real Pro Systems, Star Power Star:??Howard really is responsible for Real Pro Systems ever coming to be. ?Without the relationships that were made through Star Power we never would have got Real Pro Systems off of the ground.

I will never forget the Star Advance in Tucson where I did a break out session and showed everyone the buyer stealth site and the crude back end that Joe Lininger had attached to it with the database and drip e-mail campaigns. ?I was asked to give a private session to a couple of the Stars to go over it in more detail. ?There must have been 30 plus that showed up and gathered around the fireplace that night to get a demo. ?The rest is history.

Howard supported all of us and Real Pro Systems from the beginning. ?He was a great mentor, great friend and had an electrifying personality like no other.

Howard will be missed by many who had lives that were touched by him.

Amy Stoehr, Founder/Director of Real Estate Masters Guild (Worked with Howard for 12+ Years):??Facebook asks, ?How are you feeling, Amy?? in the status box. I honestly don?t know how to respond to that today. For those who haven?t yet received the message, Howard Brinton passed away a little past 3 a.m. today. He wore a lot of hats and titles ? mentor, coach, leader, friend, father figure, motivator, industry leader, entertainer ? and after nearly five years battling cancer (and laughing at?it, thriving in spite of it, working through it), I?m still a little shocked, I guess, that he?s gone.

Thank you,?Cathy Russell?for introducing me to Howard and STAR POWER. Thank you, Howard, for believing in me for nearly twelve years. Thank you,?Patrick Hiban?&?Patrick Stracuzzi for being there for Howard in his final moments. Let us ALL be thankful for the way Howard touched each of us individually and let us all take the best of what this family gave us and carry it forward for future generations. And God ? I sure hope you?re ready for Howard!

Terri Renella Sales Director: (former Sales Manager for Star Power):??Howard Brinton touched so many lives in a profound and positive way and I feel blessed to have known him.? I only worked for Howard for a short time but I have many things to thank him for but the two most important???..He taught me to live by the Platinum rule, treat others as THEY want to be treated.? ?And he introduced me to Rob, Caine, Joe and Galand connecting me with Real Pro Systems and a job I love.? Howard was a connector, he knew how to connect individuals at a heart level and he will be missed.

?Caine O?Brien General Manager: ??My very first introduction to the real estate market was at Star Power in 2006.? There, Howard Brinton opened the conference by coming onto the stage in a tuxedo singing ?New York, New York.?? ??The crowd went wild, and I realized I was witnessing an extraordinary force in the industry.

What I observed at that conference and all that followed, is how Howard had built a community, one committed to selfless sharing by the best of the best in real estate.? He leaves a legacy of success, selfless giving as well as down-to-earth accessibility that is an inspiration to us all.? His impact on Real Pro Systems was enormous, touching all of our lives, and he will be deeply missed.

Manchester United forward Robin van Persie sees huge activity boost to Official PFA Facebook page after impressive performance against Newcastle, say Digital Sports Group

(PRWEB UK) 29 December 2012

Digital Sports Group head of operations Matthew Tait has said the recent on field heroics of Manchester United's ?24 million acquisition have made a huge impact to the striker's Official PFA Facebook page, with the total amount of 'People talking about' increasing by over 30% week on week. The Facebook page has become a thriving hub for the Manchester United striker since its launch and is becoming more and more popular with each week that passes, with a rapidly growing community of fans keen to hear all the latest news on their favourite player. The official PFA Facebook page, along with Robin van Persie player profile on football.co.uk, provide the only online location of the official PFA biography, lifetime stats, news and high resolution gallery.

After listening to 'the little boy inside' him and moving to Manchester United, Robin Van Persie has been prolific in-front of goal, scoring 11 goals in 16 Premier League games for the Manchester giants, and getting the Red Devils out of some sticky situations in the process.

The Manchester United front man has made a string of impressive performances in recent weeks for the Red Devils and helped get United out of another sticky situation against Newcastle on Boxing Day. Sir Alex Ferguson's men had to come from behind three times to earn victory against The Magpies. Robin van Persie was once again indispensable for United, providing an assist and scoring a vital equaliser to make it 3-3 for the Red Devils before team mate Javier Hernandez netted the winner on 90 minutes.

Head of Operations at DSG, Matthew Tait had this to say, ?Robin van Persie really has no shortage of fans after his performances for Manchester United this season and we can see that by the success of his PFA Facebook page. All of us here at Digital Sports Group are proud we've had the opportunity to work with The PFA to give the fans a fantastic and unique fan resource for Robin van Persie.?

DSG became the official digital partner of the Professional Footballers Association (PFA) earlier this year and have since launched a number of Player profile fan pages on social media site Facebook as well as providing official player pages on their football news site football.co.uk.

Israel Indicts Former Foreign Minister

Israeli justice officials say former foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman has been formally indicted on charges of fraud and breach of trust.

The Justice Ministry filed the indictment against Lieberman in a Jerusalem court Sunday.

Justice officials say Lieberman was indicted on charges relating to the promotion of an Israeli diplomat who had illegally given Lieberman information about a police investigation against him.

Lieberman resigned his Foreign Ministry post earlier this month when he was informed of the pending charges, which Lieberman denies.

He remains the head of the Yisrael Beitenu party, which has formed a coalition with with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party ahead of the January 22 parliamentary elections.

Some information for this report was provided by AP and Reuters.

Broncos take top spot with 38-3 win over Chiefs

(AP) ? Peyton Manning figured one one-handed catch deserved another.

So, up the ladder he went ? throwing the ball high in the back of the end zone to Demaryius Thomas.

Thomas leaped and brought it down with his right hand, then got both feet down inside the line for a touchdown. With that, he joined Eric Decker in Denver's one-handed-touchdown club Sunday and gave the Broncos another otherworldly highlight to go with their home-field advantage throughout the playoffs after a 38-3 runaway over the Kansas City Chiefs.

"They claim they can do that all the time," said cornerback Champ Bailey, who got to watch the replays of both catches about a half-dozen times on the scoreboard. "They say they practice that. I don't see it. But as long as they do it on Sunday, I'm all for it. Those are some great, hard-working boys and I expect nothing less."

Manning, in search of his fifth MVP award and, yes, a second Super Bowl title, finished 23 for 29 for 304 yards, three scores and a 144.8 passer rating. One of his main competitors for the award, Adrian Peterson of the Vikings, ran for 199 yards to reach 2,097 for the season in a 37-34 win over Green Bay that secured a playoff berth.

That one went down to the wire. Manning was out of his game by the fourth quarter.

This was the second straight Sunday he used a grey-and-orange glove to prepare for the cold, playoff weather he could face at home the next two games.

"I threw it OK today, I guess," said Manning, who finished the season with 4,659 yards, 37 touchdowns and a 105.8 passer rating, all second best in his 15-year career.

Thanks to Houston's 28-16 loss to Indianapolis before the Broncos kicked off, Denver (13-3) will be the top seed for the sixth time. The Broncos made the Super Bowl four of the previous five times they've had home-field advantage.

Though the Chiefs (2-14) gave the Broncos as tough a tussle as anyone during their 11-game winning streak ? in a 17-9 loss last month ? this wasn't expected to be much of a game. It wasn't.

Leave it to Manning, ever the perfectionist, to ramp up the degree of difficulty.

On the 16-yard touchdown to Decker, Manning slightly overthrew the pass but Decker reached out with his left hand, brought the ball into his helmet, had it pinball against his facemask twice, then cradled it with both hands as he was falling to the ground.

"Peyton throws the ball up, giving us a chance to make a play. It's our job to catch it," Decker said.

The 13-yard touchdown to the 6-foot-3 Thomas mirrored a TD pass Manning threw to Decker last week against Cleveland: high in the back of the end zone where only his receiver could catch it.

"That was probably the limit right there," Manning said. "But I've seen him in practice. He can jump. He can really elevate. It's hard to throw it over his head, I'll say that."

The Thomas touchdown made it 28-3 and the celebration was on. The only trip the Broncos will have to make on their road to a championship would be to New Orleans for the Super Bowl. They'll open the playoffs at home Jan. 12 against Baltimore, Cincinnati or Manning's old team, the Colts.

Coach John Fox, in search of his second trip to the Super Bowl, won his 100th career game. Thomas and linebacker Wesley Woodyard congratulated him with a big splash of orange Gatorade at the end.

"It's an accomplishment, but it's something that was a lot of people's work. It wasn't one guy," Fox said.

Nor would Manning take all the credit for all he's accomplished in this, a comeback season in which he didn't know what to expect.

This marked his 73rd three-touchdown game, surpassing the record held by Brett Favre. Manning closed the regular season only 41 yards short of his career high.

"It's been a gratifying regular season," Manning said. "I will admit that. It is certainly more than I expected. I'm grateful and humble for it."

On the other end of the spectrum are the Chiefs, who, like the Broncos, had five Pro Bowlers on their roster, but finished with 119 yards of offense and wrapped up the first pick in next year's draft.

Coach Romeo Crennel watched the game from the sideline, leaning on a crutch, after having his knee drained of fluid earlier in the week. Many in Kansas City expect him to be unemployed soon.

"I told him it's been a long one," Chiefs defensive lineman Shaun Smith said about his postgame conversation with Crennel. "Sorry it didn't turn out the way (we wanted). I have faith in you and that's all that matters."

The Broncos swept their division games for the first time since 1998 ? the last time they won the Super Bowl.

John Elway retired after that one. Now, he's back, running Denver's front office, and he signed Manning with only one goal in mind: a third Lombardi Trophy.

For a brief glimmer, this could have been a game. The Broncos led 7-0 when Ronnie Hillman fumbled and Chiefs cornerback Brandon Flowers picked it up and was sprinting toward the end zone.

Manning cut off the Flowers return, allowing tight end Joel Dreessen to drag down Flowers at the 12. The Chiefs settled for a field goal and the Broncos scored the next 31 points.

Notes: Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles had 53 yards to finish the season with 1,509. ... Broncos FS Rahim Moore got his first career sack and Von Miller had one to bring his season total to 18?. ... Hillman wasn't seen against after his fumble. Lance Ball replaced him as Knowshon Moreno's backup and led the team with 66 yards on 15 carries.

Israel's Arabic Citizens Plan Election Boycott

A growing number of Israel's Arab citizens are planning to boycott January's parliamentary elections. Already, pollsters say that fewer Arabs will vote in the upcoming elections than ever before. Palestinian leaders in Israel say it is because each year the government becomes more right-wing and they feel more ostracized.

Melvin Guillard survives Jamie Varner slam but loses UFC 155 bout

Melvin Guillard and Jamie Varner staked an early claim on the UFC 155 Fight of the Night bonus with a bout that ended in a split decision. Varner won it on the judges' cards, 30-27, 27-30, 29-28.

Varner gained an edge early in the bout by tagging Guillard in the first round. Guillard showed good kicks, but couldn't escape Varner's takedowns for much of the bout. But the most frightening moment of the bout came late in the third round.

The two were scrambling on the ground for position when Guillard took Varner's back. Varner stood up, and with Guillard's head pointed to the ground, Varner powerbombed his opponent to the ground. Amazingly, Guillard was not knocked out or injured from the move. The fight ended seconds after, and the two embraced.

?This was a very emotional fight for both of us," Varner said after the bout. "After what happened a few weeks ago at The TUF Finale event, we were both ready to compete. I knew we would eventually get in the Octagon and squash our beef and I definitely feel that we did. I?m happy about my performance, I feel that I was able to dominate the fight wherever we ended up and I?m glad I got the win.?

Varner and Guillard were originally scheduled to fight during "The Ultimate Fighter" finale on Dec. 15, but illness kept Varner from the cage. Guillard was understandably upset about the delay, leading to trash talk.

Ford Barraged by C-Max Hybrid MPG Claims

Ford C-Max

?

First Hyundai and Kia suffered the slings and arrows of overestimated fuel economy figures, and now Ford is taking heat over the efficiency claims of their C-Max Hybrid-- but this time, the real world discrepancies are considerable.

?

The buzzkill for Ford is huge: the C-Max has gone from being the quickest selling hybrid in history to becoming a poster child for inaccurate fuel economy claims. Even automotive journalists are disgruntled over the real world MPG numbers produced by the small hatchback; Automotive News scribe Larry P. Vellequette reports an average indicated 35.5 mpg on his personal C-Max, while Consumer Reports says the 20 percent divide they've witnessed between published numbers and actual MPGs is the largest discrepancy they've measured in any current model.

?

While a recent class-action lawsuit is-- ahem, fueling further woes for Ford, the Blue Oval's biggest challenge will be restoring credibility among potential buyers.

Macedonian opposition rallies to demand early elections

SKOPJE (Reuters) - Several thousand people rallied in front of the headquarters of Macedonia's rightist ruling party on Saturday demanding the immediate resignation of Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski and early elections.

The rally was the culmination of days of smaller countrywide protests provoked by an incident last week when the opposition was ejected from the parliament after a disagreement and a brawl over the size of next year's budget.

"We have already decided, we will go to the end, until we finally win and bring democracy back to this country" Branko Crvenkovski, the head of the opposition Social Democrats, told the cheering crowd.

Last week the government proposed a 148-billion-denari ($3.2 billion) budget for 2013 last month, forecasting a deficit of 3.5 percent of gross domestic product. It put growth next year at 2 percent of GDP.

But the left-wing opposition condemned the budget proposal as profligate at a time of austerity and demanded a cut equivalent to about $260 million. The government refused and the opposition then submitted about a thousand amendments to the draft before tensions flared on Monday.

The government pushed the budget vote with just over half of deputies present, prompting the opposition to initiate a campaign of civil disobedience.

At the rally, Crvenkovski said his party's backers will maintain protests until the government steps down, paving the way for early elections organized by an independent body.

Parliamentary elections in Macedonia are tentatively slated for 2015.

Macedonia, a former Yugoslav republic, wants to join the European Union and NATO but it still faces opposition from neighboring Greece which says that its name is a territorial appropriation of the name of a northern Greek province.

The country is also facing tensions between its Macedonian Slav majority and ethnic Albanian minority.

November Pending Home Sales - Business Insider

AP

U.S. pending home sales jumped 1.7 percent month-over-month in November.

Economist were expecting a 1.0 percent month-over-month gain.

"Even with market frictions related to the mortgage process, home contract activity continues to improve," wrote Lawrence Yun of the National Association of Realtors.? "Home sales are recovering now based solely on fundamental demand and favorable affordability conditions."

Here's more from the NAR:

WASHINGTON (December 28, 2012) - Pending home sales increased in November for the third straight month and reached the highest level in two-and-a-half years, according to the National Association of Realtors?.

The Pending Home Sales Index,* a forward-looking indicator based on contract signings, rose 1.7 percent to 106.4 in November from a downwardly revised 104.6 in October and is 9.8 percent above November 2011 when it was 96.9. The data reflect contracts but not closings.

The index is at the highest level since April 2010 when it hit 111.3 as buyers were rushing to beat the deadline for the home buyer tax credit. With the exception of several months affected by tax stimulus, the last time there was a higher reading was in February 2007 when the index reached 107.9.

Lawrence Yun , NAR chief economist, said home sales are on a sustained uptrend. "Even with market frictions related to the mortgage process, home contract activity continues to improve. Home sales are recovering now based solely on fundamental demand and favorable affordability conditions."

On a year-over-year basis, pending home sales have risen for 19 consecutive months.

The upward momentum means existing-home sales should rise 8 to 9 percent in 2013 to approximately 5.1 million, following a 10 percent gain expected for all of 2012. The median existing-home price is projected to rise just over 4 percent in 2013, after rising more than 7 percent in 2012.

The PHSI in the Northeast rose 5.2 percent to 83.3 in November and is 15.2 percent above a year ago. In the Midwest the index edged up 0.1 percent to 103.8 in November and is 15.2 percent above November 2011. Pending home sales in the South were unchanged at an index of 117.2 in November and are 13.9 percent higher than a year ago. In the West the index rose 4.2 percent in November to 110.1, but is 3.2 percent below November 2011 with inventory constraints limiting sales.

Florida Panthers Prospects Call Up Chances

Jameson Cooper | December 29, 2012

While some prospects like Jonathan Huberdeau will be?immediately?rushed into the Florida Panthers lineup once this current lockout is over, other young players will have to rely on good showings in the minors ? as well as some luck. Here are estimated call up chances for some of the Panthers top prospects going into the 2012-2013 season.

Drew Shore San Antonio

Drew Shore (Ross Bonander/THW)

Drew Shore: Taken 44th overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, Drew Shore is starting to show off the kind of talent that initially caught the Panthers attention. Shore is an impressive two-way forward with above average scoring ability who can also use his 6?2 frame to his advantage when fighting for pucks. While Shore may not be a flashy player, his overall game is solid and his defensive abilities could be of great help to the Panthers penalty kill. Shore is currently playing for the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL and is second in team scoring with 20 points (6G 14A).

Shore?s Call Up Chance: 60%

Colby Robak: Taken 46th overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, Colby Robak is in the midst of possibly the most important season of his career. At 6?3?, 207 pounds, Robak has an imposing body that he uses to control the tempo of the game on both ends of the ice. He has a great feel for the game as well as a booming slap shot that he is still learning how to harness. A laundry list of Panthers? injuries led to Robak getting his first NHL call up last season. In three games with the club, Robak?didn?t?record a point, but played well when he was given opportunities. While Robak still has the potential to be a solid NHL defender, other young talented defenders like Erik Gudbranson and Dmitry Kulikov could lead to Robak possibly being traded in the future. In order for Robak to crack the Panthers lineup this season, he would most likely have to jump over both Tyson Strachan and Keaton Ellerby in order to do so. Robak is currently playing for the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL where he leads all team defenders with 14 points (3G 11A).

Robak?s Call Up Chance: 20%

Jacob Markstrom: Taken 31st overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, Jacob Markstrom is one of the most highly touted?goaltending?prospects in the NHL. A native of Sweden, Markstrom is a talented butterfly goaltender with an impressive glove and an even more impressive frame. Standing at 6?3?, Markstrom makes the net seem incredibly tiny to wary shooters. Markstrom was able to make his NHL debut last season and performed exceptionally well (2-4-1 / 2.66 / .923%). ?During this current NHL labor dispute, Markstrom is playing for the San Antonio Rampage and was recently named the??AHL Player of The Week?. When the puck finally drops this season in the NHL, Markstrom will be given the opportunity to shine if veteran net minders Jose Theodore and Scott Clemmensen struggle.

Markstrom?s Call Up Chance: 90%

Alex Petrovic San Antonio

Alex Petrovic (Courtesy of the Texas Stars)

Alex Petrovic: Taken 36th overall in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, defenseman Alex Petrovic is making his presence felt in the AHL. In only his first season with the San Antonio Rampage, Petrovic is impressing both fans and management. While his offensive game still needs a lot of polishing, Petrovic?s greatest skill is his physical play on defense and his eagerness to drop the gloves at any time. It is unlikely that Petrovic will play ahead of Tyson Strachan, Keaton Ellerby and Colby Robak, so fans should look for him to spend the rest of the season in the AHL working on his size and skill set. However, heading into the Panthers? 2013-2014 training camp, Petrovic will have a great chance of cracking the NHL roster if he continues to grow in the minors.

Petrovic?s Call Up Chance: 10%

Quinton Howden: Taken 25th overall in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Quinton Howden could possibly get his first look of NHL action this year. At left wing, Howden is gifted with exceptional speed and agility, as well as an above average scoring sense. With injury-prone wingers like Tomas Fleischmann and Tomas Kopecky, there is a great chance that Howden could finally break onto the NHL scene. Howden?s quickness and defensive prowess could be an integral part of the Panthers? penalty killing unit both this season and beyond. Currently, Quinton Howden is playing for the San Antonio Rampage, where he has 12 points (6G, 6A) including one shorthanded goal.

Howden?s Call Up Chance: 75%

Nick Bjugstad: Taken 19th overall in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Nick Bjugstad is a dark horse candidate to join the Panthers if they reach the playoffs this season. While he is currently enrolled at the University of Minnesota, Bjugstad could make a jump to the NHL after the collegiate season has ended, much like Chris Kreider did for the New York Rangers this past season. Bjugstad is able to use his 6?5? frame to impose his will at both ends of the ice. Whether it?s controlling the puck in the offensive zone or throwing powerful body checks on opposing players, Bjugstad can do it all. His chances of joining the Panthers this season will be directly linked to the success the team has on the ice prior to his arrival. If the Panthers cannot make the playoffs again this season. Bjugstad will most likely have to wait until next season for his NHL debut.

Bjugstad?s Call Up Chance: 10%

'Rescue Me' singer Fontella Bass dies at 72

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

Fontella Bass, whose voice soared in the 1965 hit "Rescue Me," died Wednesday at 72, her family said in a statement.?

"She was surrounded by her children and grandchildren when she was called home," the family said, thanking the singer's famiy, friends and fans for their support.

St. Louis TV station KSDK reports that Bass died of a heart attack.

Bass came from a musical family. Her mother was gospel great Martha Bass, and her brother was R&B and gospel singer David Peaston, who died in February.

"Rescue Me" topped the R&B charts for a month in 1965, reached No.4 on the pop charts, and sold over a million copies. Yet Bass' name was never as famous as that of the tune, as many assumed the song was sung by Aretha Franklin instead. The very first line in Bass' entry in the online AllMusic encyclopedia reads, "The 1965 classic "Rescue Me" is widely regarded as the greatest record Aretha Franklin never made."

Gabe Palacio / Getty Images file

Her other hits included "Don't Mess With a Good Thing" and "You'll Miss Me (When I'm Gone)," both with Bobby McClure.

Wrote one fan on the YouTube video for "Rescue Me": "Fontella Bass was one of the greatest soul / rhythm? & blues vocalists of the 60's & 70's. Her voice to this day all these decades later still chills my skin each time I hear her singing. she was one of my generation's most recognized yet often mistaken singers. Rest well, goddess of soul & blues, you'll be deeply missed & remembered always darling."

In 1993, she won a lawsuit against American Express for their use of "Rescue Me" in a 1990 commercial.

She is survived by four children.

Winter storm: Snow, rain, winds hit Northeast

As tornadoes ripped through the South, more than a foot of snow was dumped over parts of the Midwest, making for a post-Christmas travel nightmare. NBC's Mike Seidel reports.

By Alastair Jamieson, NBC News

A winter storm that has caused destruction and holiday travel disruption across the central United States?swept into the Northeast early Thursday, where it was expected to bring up to 2 feet of snow, drenching rain and possible flooding.

The major weather system has already brought record snowfall, icy roads, deadly high winds and even twisters to the nation?s midsection, leaving at least six dead.

It is now ?taking aim on the eastern Great Lakes and Northeast with heavy snow, coastal rain and gusty winds,? Weather Channel meteorologist Michael Palmer told NBC News.?Gusts of up to 60 mph are also possible.

Read more at weather.com

?The heaviest snow will fall from western New York through the Adirondacks into Vermont, New Hampshire and northern Maine.?

More than 350 flights had been canceled Thursday morning, following the grounding of more than 1,600 the day before, Erica Hill of NBC's TODAY reported. Across the country, there were "thousands of passengers stranded by a backlog of canceled flights," TODAY reported, adding that more than 9,300 flights had been canceled since the storm began.

Where there isn?t snow, there will be torrential rain: From coastal New Jersey into southeast Massachusetts, localized urban flooding is possible with minor to moderate coastal flooding.

In New Jersey, flooding and high winds forced the closure of parts of Brick Township, local officials told the Weather Channel's Mike Seidel.

Showers and thunderstorms will hit the Southeast while residents in the Northeast can expect snow over the weekend. The Weather Channel's Kelly Cass reports.

Across most of the country, it will be colder than normal as arctic air dominates.

The storm pushed through the Upper Ohio Valley and made its way into the Northeast Wednesday night. Within hours, there was anywhere from a few inches of snow to a dozen in some locations.

Hundreds of flights were canceled or delayed on Wednesday and scores of motorists got stuck on icy roads or slid into drifts.

John Kwiatkowski, an Indianapolis-based meteorologist with the weather service, said: "The way I've been describing it is as a low-end blizzard, but that's sort of like saying a small Tyrannosaurus rex."

The storm system spawned Gulf Coast region tornadoes on Christmas Day, startling people like Bob and Sherry Sims of Mobile, Alal., who had just finished dinner.

"We heard that very distinct sound, like a freight train," said Bob Sims. They headed for a bathroom in the center of their house.

Power was still out at the Sims' home on Wednesday, but the house wasn't damaged and they used a generator to run heaters to stay warm. Some neighbors were less fortunate, their roofs peeled away and porches smashed by falling trees.

On one of the busiest travel days of the year, bad weather has forced airlines to cancel or delay flights. NBC's Katy Tur reports.

The storm also left freezing temperatures in its aftermath, and forecasters said parts of the Southeast from Virginia to Florida saw severe thunderstorms.

About 40 vehicles got bogged down trying to make it up a slick hill in central Indiana, and four state snowplows slid off roads as snow fell at the rate of 3 inches an hour in some places.

Two passengers in a car on a sleet-slickened Arkansas highway were killed Wednesday in a head-on collision, and two people, including a 76-year-old Milwaukee woman, were killed Tuesday on Oklahoma highways. Deaths from wind-toppled trees were reported in Texas and Louisiana.?

The Weather Channel's?Michael Palmer and?The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Business VoIP Bolsters US BPO Companies

Outsourcing, particularly business process outsourcing (BPO), is among the booming industries in the US. Basically, outsourcing involves the hiring of an outside company by another company, government agency or an organization. The former would perform the tasks of the latter. Some of these tasks include human resource management, financial transaction processing and call centers.

Many businesses now rely on outsourcing as it streamlines work-flow and lessens their expenses. According to a study, the global outsourcing revenues reached $425 billion in 2010. This figure jumped to $500 billion in 2011. Today, US companies are among the leaders in the BPO industry. One reason why BPO companies earned the trust of customers is due to the use of communication technological advancements such as VoIP. Having a reliable communications system is essential and crucial to BPO companies especially for the starting ones.?

VoIP for business has a lot of benefits that really work to the advantage of BPO companies. Here are some of the significant benefits that matter to their business. ? ? ? ? ? ?

? ? ? ? ?Greatly lessens their costs. The BPO companies particularly those involved in call centers have huge volumes of incoming and outgoing calls daily. The traditional phone system would cost them so much, and thus would not generate them their desired revenues. With VoIP, they enjoy lower rates on international calls and the elimination of long distance charges among offices.

? ? ?Makes BPO work simpler. With the traditional system, BPO companies suffer from unanswered phone calls, which is not good for them. It is undesirable because it might create an impression that the company rejects the customers. But with VoIP, there are no more missed calls of customer inquiries. One good example is the voice recordings that can answer customers in the absence of the agents. Usually, BPO companies have a list of commonly asked questions. For this, they have voice recordings of answers to make work simpler and more efficient.

? ? ? ? ?Seamless connection among stations. As one of their strategies, BPO companies also have stations in other countries. In this situation, they need to have seamless connections for easy communication with business partners and managers. Using VoIP lets them have smooth communication. It is very important especially when giving updates and reports.

These are just some of the primary benefits of business VoIP that really works for small and medium business companies and even large BPO companies. These can also work for organizations and government agencies that seek to lessen their spending on communication. In recent years, VoIP service has become more and more attractive since it does not only offer affordable rates but also quality and excellent services. There are now actually VoIP providers that offer services and plans that specifically targets office needs. Some of the good service providers have plans such as Pro, ProPlus and ProBusiness. Basically, these plans address the needs of your company based on its level and capabilities. As a result, you enjoy efficient use of the VoIP service. ?

The BPO industry has been contributing to the economy. However, it can contribute more if the companies maximize the use of VoIP, which will lead to a boost in their industry and eventually the country?s economy.

Packing Pro (for iPhone)

I once left for spring break without any socks, which may sound like the precursor to a wild story, except I was headed to Rochester, New York, to ride out a blizzard at my friend's father's apartment. We got to town, hit up the mall, and I bought a six-pack of cheap socks. If I had written a packing list or had an app to help me prep my trip, such as Packing Pro (for iPhone) ($2.99), chances are I would have forgotten the socks regardless. Life rolls like that sometimes. You know you ought to pack socks and you simply don't, even if it's written down.

To pay $3 for an app that reminds me to pack socks?or medication, sunscreen, a light jacket, a knitted cap, and my swimsuit?seems frivolous even to someone as into organization as I am.

For some, however, it might be the very specificity of the reminders in this indie app that make it worth the modest cost.

Checklist Planning and Packing
Packing Pro helps you pack, and that's just about all it's designed to do. You work from a sample list of items to pack or create your own and tick off items as they go into your luggage.

It has a handful of other reminders, too, like booking reservations and watering the plants before you leave home, which you can save into checklists to guide your harried soul while you're running around your apartment like a chicken with its head cut off worried that you'll miss your flight if you dally a moment longer.

The default palette puts before you a lackluster brown color scheme and insipid fonts (using excessive italics) that suggest perhaps what's inside is equally uninspiring?however, the lack of visual panache really does not speak to the attention to detail that went into creating sample packing lists. They are comprehensive and thorough, and at any time you can create a new item, which you can classify to any one of dozens of pre-programmed categories.

Moreover, you can change the color scheme and fonts, but, ultimately, no one should waste her time customizing the look of a single-utility app that's overpriced to begin with. Theme customization options turn out to be just one fatty area. The app needs a lot of tightening.

From the homescreen, I created several packing lists, a few from sample lists and a few from scratch, but based on real travel experiences as I tried to think through the kinds of things I would genuinely need. Packing Pro's sample lists range from "male" and "female" to "camping" and "business." The sample female list did have more than I imagined it might, but all the other sample lists are male-oriented. Where are the bras and sports bras? The business sample list includes three ties, a suit jacket, and a handkerchief, but not pantyhose, jewelry, or tampons.

Pack It Up, Pack It In...
As mentioned, I could always add the items that I wanted to include by either writing them in as special entries or finding them on other lists to add--except that customizing a packing list proved to be much more time-consuming than packing on the fly, forgetting my socks, and picking up a few pairs when en route to my destination. Again, there's fat to trim. The app requires heavy-handed tightening and simplification to be more useful.

If Packing Pro were a 99-cent iPhone app, I would have scored it slightly higher than the three-star grade it got. It's not a terrible app, but it costs too much for such a single-purpose tool.

Positive Prescription: Fitness, Nutrition and a Good Attitude ...

RX prescription form

One of the trends I?d love to see get going is a prescription for ?real health.?? Last year I finally convinced my doctor to start writing prescriptions in that regard.? While he still writes them for medications, he has now added fitness, nutrition and a good attitude to the mix.? It took many years and my own studies in epigenetics, neuroscience, fitness and psychology to convince him regarding how those three areas did more for health than standard medicine.

Instead of simply taking care of one?s health, many people have relegated it to prescription medications, surgery, and even hospital care.? Most doctors focus on that too.? There a few progressives types that buck their own health care system to do what is right and what works.? And hopefully, it will soon be the trend and not the exception.

Still, I believe, it is ultimately up to each one of us to write our own prescription of health.? That means to take action to get fit, eat healthy and maintain that good attitude in all aspects of life.? And while we are on that subject of writing, get out a journal (a spiral-bound notebook will suffice) and start writing in it.? Write down your fitness goals and the action steps you WILL take towards them.? Write consistently too.? Make this next year one that will be your best yet.? A healthy body leads to a healthy mind.

Start taking control of your own health and when you do that, you will feel better, look better and be better.? That will transform itself into other areas of your life too.? People love to associate with those that have that youthfulness glow about them, in mind and body.

You now have a prescription of fitness, nutrition and a positive attitude.? Use it starting NOW!

Four planets in 'habitable zones' spotted within spitting distance of Earth

Astronomers say they used a new statistical technique to find four possible super-Earths orbiting in the habitable zone of two stars within 22 light-years of Earth, Gliese 667C and tau Ceti.

By Pete Spotts,?Staff writer / December 19, 2012

This diagram shows an artist's rendering comparing our own solar system to Kepler-22, a star system containing the first 'habitable zone' planet discovered by NASA's Kepler mission. The 'habitable zone' is a region where under the right conditions, liquid water can form stable pools on the surface.

Astronomers say they have uncovered evidence for what could be four super-Earth planets orbiting within the habitable zones of two stars within 22 light-years of Earth.

Three of those candidate planets are among a tightly packed clutch of five that orbit Gliese 667C, part of a triple-star system 22 light-years away in the constellation Scorpius. The other possible planet is one of five orbiting tau Ceti, a sun-like star 12 light-years away in the constellation Cetus.

Taken together, the detections not only add to accumulating evidence that planets look to be more common than stars ? and that planets in habitable zones could be more common than previously thought, some of researchers reporting the finds say.

The finds also illustrate the power of improved statistical tools to boldly uncover candidate planets where no planet had been found before.

The evidence for these candidate planets requires independent confirmation, the researchers caution.?Still, the tools represent "a real breakthrough," says Steven Vogt, an astronomer at the University of California at Santa Cruz and a member of the team reporting the results for tau Ceti. The approach the team took leaves only about one chance in 3 million that the detections could herald something other than a planet.

Since the mid-1990s, astronomers have bagged more than 850 extra-solar planets. The ultimate goal is to find rocky planets with Earth-like masses orbiting within their stars' habitable zones ? a region where under the right conditions, liquid water can form stable pools on the surface. Liquid water is considered an essential ingredient for organic life.

Different groups of astronomers had aimed three telescopes for various lengths of time at tau Ceti and found nothing. Led by Mikko Tuomi at the University of Hertfordshire in Britain, the team reporting this latest analysis applied relatively new statistical tools to the combined data from these telescopes.

The result: "Five planets came out: boom, boom, boom, boom, boom ... as clear as a bell," Dr. Vogt says.

Tau Ceti has about 78 percent of our own sun's mass, but its composition is quite similar, Dr. Tuomi's team reports. Its candidate planets range from 2 to 6.6 times Earth's mass.

The innermost object orbits the star once every 14 days, while the outermost takes 642 days to make its circuit. The fourth planet from the star, with a 168-day orbit, travels well within a zone where liquid water could remain stable on the planet's surface, the team estimates. However, the results don't speak directly to what the planets are made of.?

A similar story has played out for Philip Gregory, an astronomer at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Previous researchers had found two planets orbiting Gliese 667C, a red dwarf with 31 percent of the sun's mass. Using a broadly similar statistical approach, he reports detecting the initial two, plus three more planets. Three of the five fall within the star's habitable zone, he estimates.
