Novel approach to create red blood cells, platelets in vitro

May 30, 2013 ? A study led by Boston University School of Medicine has identified a novel approach to create an unlimited number of human red blood cells and platelets in vitro. In collaboration with Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH) and Boston Medical Center (BMC), the researchers differentiated induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells into these cell types, which are typically obtained through blood donations. This finding could potentially reduce the need for blood donations to treat patients requiring blood transfusions and could help researchers examine novel therapeutic targets to treat a variety of diseases, including sickle cell disease.

Published online in the journal Blood, the study was led by George J. Murphy, PhD, assistant professor of medicine at BUSM and co-director of the Center for Regenerative Medicine (CReM) at Boston University and BMC and performed in collaboration with David Sherr, PhD, a professor in environmental health at BUSM and BUSPH.

iPS cells are derived by reprogramming adult cells into a primitive stem cell state that are capable of differentiating into different types of cells. iPS cells can be generated from mature somatic cells, such as skin or blood cells, allowing for the development of patient-specific cells and tissues that should not elicit inappropriate immune responses, making them a powerful tool for biological research and a resource for regenerative medicine.

In this study, the iPS cells were obtained from the CReM iPS Cell Bank. The cells were exposed to growth factors in order to coax them to differentiate into red blood cells and platelets using a patented technology. These stem cells were examined in depth to study how blood cells form in order to further the understanding of how this process is regulated in the body.

In their new approach, the team added compounds that modulate the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) pathway. Previous research has shown this pathway to be involved in the promotion of cancer cell development via its interactions with environmental toxins. In this study, however, the team noted an exponential increase in the production of functional red blood cells and platelets in a short period of time, suggesting that AhR plays an important role in normal blood cell development.

"This finding has enabled us to overcome a major hurdle in terms of being able to produce enough of these cells to have a potential therapeutic impact both in the lab and, down the line, in patients," said Murphy. "Additionally, our work suggests that AhR has a very important biological function in how blood cells form in the body."

Blood transfusion is an indispensable cell therapy and the safety and adequacy of the blood supply is an international concern. In 2009, the National Blood Data Resource Center reported that blood-banking institutions collected more than 17 million units of whole blood and red blood cells and US hospitals were transfusing more than 15 million patients annually. Given the variety of blood types, there are -- even in developed countries -- chronic shortages of blood for some groups of patients. Sporadic shortages of blood also can occur in association with natural or human-made disasters. The number of blood transfusions is expected to increase in people over the age of 60 and could lead to an insufficient blood supply by 2050.

"Patient-specific red blood cells and platelets derived from iPS cells, which would solve problems related to immunogenicity and contamination, could potentially be used therapeutically and decrease the anticipated shortage and the need for blood donations," added Murphy.

iPS-derived cells have great potential to lead to a variety of novel treatments for diseases given that they can be used to construct disease models in a lab. The iPS-derived red blood cells could be used by researchers examining malaria and sickle cell anemia while the iPS-derived platelets could be used to explore cardiovascular disease and treatments for blood clotting disorders.

Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey have both announced they were leaving "Idol."

Updated at 8:16 p.m. ET: It's official: "American Idol" is down two more judges as both Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj announced their departures after only one season on Thursday night.

Carey was the first to reveal her exit when her publicist tweeted that the success of her new single, "#Beautiful," is prompting the superstar to go on a world tour and leave the singing competition.

Carey herself has not yet commented on her decision, other than to retweet PMK-BNC. But the network and the show's producers issued a joint statement bidding her adieu:

?Mariah Carey is a true global icon -- one of the most accomplished artists on the planet -- and we feel extremely fortunate that she was able to bring her wisdom and experience to the 'American Idol' contestants this season," the statement by Fox, 19 Entertainment and Freemantle Media said. "We know she will remain an inspiration to 'Idol' hopefuls for many seasons to come.?

Shortly after the announcement, Minaj made her own exit via Twitter:

"Nicki Minaj is a superstar who brought a level of honesty and passion to 'American Idol' and who had a tremendous positive impact on so many contestants this season. Given her extremely busy career, we understand and respect her decision and wish her the best," Fox and producers FremantleMedia and 19 Entertainment said in a statement.

Of the three new judges who joined in season 12, only Keith Urban remains, though his future on the show is not yet clear.

Original judge Randy Jackson announced shortly before the finale that he was exiting at the end of the season. Even before news of his resignation came, rumors of a complete overhaul of the judges' table had been rampant as the former ratings juggernaut continued to lose viewers. Recent reports suggest the show may be bringing back former contestants to fill out the panel next season.

Carey and Minaj's tenure on the show was rocky from the start because of their well-publicized spats. Critics never took to Carey, who appeared to lacked focus and did not provide constructive criticism of the contestants, while few longtime "Idol" fans seemed to appreciate Minaj and her outgoing character.

The new judges must be in place by August when the auditions begin.

Adult stem cells could hold key to cure type 1 diabetes

May 29, 2013 ? Millions of people with type 1 diabetes depend on daily insulin injections to survive. They would die without the shots because their immune system attacks the very insulin-producing cells it was designed to protect. Now, a University of Missouri scientist has discovered that this attack causes more damage than scientists realized. The revelation is leading to a potential cure that combines adult stem cells with a promising new drug.

The discovery is reported in the current online issue of Diabetes, the American Diabetes Association's flagship research publication. Habib Zaghouani, PhD, J. Lavenia Edwards Chair in Pediatrics, leads the research with his team at the MU School of Medicine.

"We discovered that type 1 diabetes destroys not only insulin-producing cells but also blood vessels that support them," Zaghouani said. "When we realized how important the blood vessels were to insulin production, we developed a cure that combines a drug we created with adult stem cells from bone marrow. The drug stops the immune system attack, and the stem cells generate new blood vessels that help insulin-producing cells to multiply and thrive."

Surrounded by an army of students and a colony of mice, Zaghouani has spent the past 12 years in his lab at MU studying autoimmune diseases like type 1 diabetes. Often called juvenile diabetes, the disease can lead to numerous complications, including cardiovascular disease, kidney damage, nerve damage, osteoporosis and blindness.

Type 1 diabetes attacks the pancreas. The organ, which is about the size of a hand and located in the abdomen, houses cell clusters called islets. Islets contain beta cells that make insulin, which controls blood sugar levels. In people with type 1 diabetes, beta cells no longer make insulin because the body's immune system has attacked and destroyed them.

When the immune system strikes the beta cells, the attack causes collateral damage to capillaries that carry blood to and from the islets. The damage done to the tiny blood vessels led Zaghouani on a new path toward a cure.

In previous studies, Zaghouani and his team developed a drug against type 1 diabetes called Ig-GAD2. They found that treatment with the drug stopped the immune system from attacking beta cells, but too few beta cells survived the attack to reverse the disease. In his latest study, Zaghouani used Ig-GAD2 and then injected adult stem cells from bone marrow into the pancreas in the hope that the stem cells would evolve into beta cells.

"The combination of Ig-GAD2 and bone marrow cells did result in production of new beta cells, but not in the way we expected," Zaghouani said. "We thought the bone marrow cells would evolve directly into beta cells. Instead, the bone marrow cells led to growth of new blood vessels, and it was the blood vessels that facilitated reproduction of new beta cells. In other words, we discovered that to cure type 1 diabetes, we need to repair the blood vessels that allow the subject's beta cells to grow and distribute insulin throughout the body."

Zaghouani is pursuing a patent for his promising treatment and hopes to translate his discovery from use in mice to humans. He is continuing his research with funding from the National Institutes of Health and MU.

"This is extremely exciting for our research team," he said. "Our discovery about the importance of restoring blood vessels has the potential to be applied not only to type 1 diabetes but also a number of other autoimmune diseases."

Florida man donates 100 gallons of blood

LAKE PARK, Fla. (AP) ? A South Florida man has reached a rare milestone, being credited with donating 100 gallons of blood.

The Palm Beach Post (http://bit.ly/10JVcwN) reports 84-year-old Harold Mendenhall started giving blood on July 7, 1977. Last month, he was credited his 100th gallon.

OneBlood, the Florida blood bank where Mendehall donates, concedes that he didn't actually donate 100 gallons of blood, but platelets, a blood product.

Platelet donors like Mendenhall get credit for donating two pints every time they give at most blood banks, said Susan Forbes, OneBlood's spokeswoman. In that two-hour procedure ? about eight times longer than donating a pint of whole blood ? more than a gallon of a donor's blood is processed but less than pint is kept, Forbes said. Platelet doors can also give 24 times per year, compared to about six times for whole blood.

Mendenhall started donating blood when his wife, Frankie, was diagnosed with breast cancer. When she died seven years later, Mendenhall says he was lost. He stopped by the blood bank on his way home from work. Soon he was donating regularly.

Mendenhall says giving blood helped him cope with the loss of his wife and, later, two sons.

Letter possibly laced with ricin sent to Obama

There?s a lot to like about Samsung?s flagship Galaxy S4 smartphone; it?s the fastest-selling Android phone ever for plenty of great reasons. As awesome as the phone is though, there are some things about it that are absolutely maddening. For me, Samsung?s keyboard might be my biggest qualm where core functionality is concerned, namely because it doesn?t support an auto-correct function. Luckily for users like me who can?t survive without auto-correct, there?s an easy (and free) way to fix this huge omission. As terrible as some auto-correct implementations are ? I?m looking at you, Apple ? living without this crucial feature is far worse. Instead of auto-correct, Samsung?s keyboard tries to predict the words users type in a field above

Tornadoes touch down in Oklahoma

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) ? At least two tornadoes touched down in Oklahoma Thursday as a powerful storm system moved through the state, but there were no immediate reports of any injuries, weather officials said.

The National Weather Service reported a tornado touched the ground Thursday near the town of Perkins in northeast Oklahoma. A second tornado with the same storm was reported near Ripley. Both were in rural areas and didn't seem to cause significant damage.

The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., warned that there was a moderate risk of severe weather over much of eastern and central Oklahoma ? the same area where a tornado last week killed 24 people in Moore. That tornado was a top-of-the-scale EF5 twister that cut a 17-mile path of destruction.

Tornado warnings were in effect Thursday in parts of Oklahoma and Arkansas. Storms could also produce 3-inch hail.

"Right now we've been getting a few thunderstorms, but they're very severe supercell thunderstorms," said Michael Scotten, a meteorologist with the National Weather Services. "The whole storm rotates, and they produce on occasion some tornadoes and heavy hail."

Scotten said the severe weather threat would continue over parts of Oklahoma until 10 p.m. Thursday.

Severe weather was also possible in other parts of the central United states, including parts of Kansas Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Surge in hate crimes divides Greek coalition

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Greece's coalition government was in disarray Thursday over efforts to crackdown on growing racist violence, as majority conservatives and their center-left partners clashed over the best way to tackle anti-immigrant violence.

The embarrassing rift in conservative Prime Minister Antonis Samaras' government occurred amid pressure from the European Union and human rights groups to toughen anti-racism laws.

Greece, in its sixth year of recession ? and with the highest number of immigrants entering the European Union illegally ? has seen a sharp rise in violence against non-European immigrants, as well as a surge in support for the xenophobic and extreme right Golden Dawn Party.

Samaras' center-right New Democracy party refused to endorse draft legislation overhauling laws on racial equality, and instead submitted more limited amendments to laws passed in 1979.

But his coalition partners, the Socialist Pasok party and Democratic Left, submitted the more extensive proposals as a private members bill.

"What matters is that we unite political parties and the people against the Nazis, and not to let the danger of neo-Nazism divide us," Samaras said in a written statement.

Formed after general elections last June, the ruling coalition cannot pass legislation without some form of cross-party support.

The European Union, as well as international Jewish groups, have urged Greece to tackle racism by criminalizing incitement to commit racial violence among other measures.

The New York-based organization Human Rights Watch on Thursday also urged the swift adoption of measures against racial violence.

"With people being attacked on the streets, Greece urgently needs to beef up its criminal justice response to hate crimes," Judith Sunderland of Human Rights Watch said.

Opponents of the racism bill argue it could violate constitutional rights to free speech and free assembly. Meanwhile leftwing parties claim Samaras' conservatives fear antagonizing the far right as the country recovers from its crippling financial crisis.

Late Wednesday, several thousand Golden Dawn supporters attended a rally in central Athens. Holding Greek flags and fire torches, the crowd chanted: "Foreigners out of Greece."

Campaigning aggressively against immigration and Greece's bailout agreement, Golden Dawn has reaped a surge in support in recent years. The party elected 18 members to the 300-member parliament in last year's general election with nearly 7 percent of the vote.

An opinion poll for private Mega television published this week suggested support for the extreme right party has risen to 10 percent.

The GPO survey of 1,200 adults, conducted May 24-27, found two-thirds regarded Golden Dawn as a threat to democracy, and half supported the anti-racism law. Fewer than 40 percent of those who voted for Samaras' center-right New Democracy in the last election back the proposed legislation.

"There is no doubt that this law is targeting Golden Dawn," Golden Dawn leader Nikolaos Michaloliakos told his party's lawmakers ahead of Wednesday's rally.

"Let them bring the law to parliament and we will see, finally, who is with Greece and who is on the side of the illegal immigrants."

Golden Dawn denies any involvement in attacks against immigrants, though party supporters have been arrested as suspects in several recent incidents.

Cantwell: New Farm Bill Would Mean Jobs in Eastern WA, Healthier School Meals

SPOKANE VALLEY, WA ? Today, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and Spokane-area farmers urged Congress to act on the 2013 Farm Bill, which could help make school meals more nutritious, increase research into peas? and lentils? health benefits, and support Eastern Washington jobs. The Senate is currently debating the Agriculture Reform, Food and Jobs Act of 2013 (S. 954), which passed the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry on May 14.

Speaking from Spokane Seed Company?s processing facility, Cantwell and growers of ?pulse crops? ? which include peas, lentils and chickpeas ? highlighted how two Cantwell provisions in the Farm Bill could help drive total farm acres of pulse crops in Washington state to more than double over the next 5 to 10 years, according to industry estimates. Nationwide, pulse crop production could also double in the next eight years.

Washington state is the top chickpea producer in the nation ? producing nearly half of the nation?s total ? and third in the nation for pea and lentil production. Thousands of jobs in Washington state are supported by the growing pulse crop industry, including 43 at Spokane Seed.

?We need to pass a Farm Bill now to support jobs at Spokane Seed and across Eastern Washington,? said Cantwell. ?Peas and lentils aren?t just the gateway to better health for America?s children ? they?re also the gateway to more jobs right here in Eastern Washington. Washington state is already the top chickpea producer in the nation. With the right investments, acreage of chickpeas, peas and lentils could double and support even more jobs in the state.?

The 2013 Farm Bill includes the Cantwell-backed Pulse Health Initiative, which would support $25 million per year over five years in pulse crop health research grants to help increase public demand and drive job growth. The research would look into the health and nutrition benefits of pulse crops, including their ability to reduce obesity and associated chronic disease. The initiative would support technical expertise to help food companies use nutrient-dense pulse crops in their products as well as establish an educational program to encourage the consumption and production of pulse crops. On a visit to Spokane on June 3, 2012, Cantwell joined local businesses, farmers and researchers and urged Senate leaders to make the ?Pulse Health Initiative? a top priority in the Farm Bill.

The Farm Bill also includes Cantwell?s Pulse School Pilot amendment, which would provide the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) $10 million through 2017 to purchase pulse crops to use in school breakfasts and lunches. This could include raw beans and lentils as well as other foods made from pulse crops, such as hummus, pizza dough fortified with pea flower, or baked beans. Flours made from pulse crops could be added to breads, tortillas and pastas to enhance their nutritional value. Pulse crops are an excellent, cost-effective source of fiber, potassium, protein and other essential vitamins and nutrients.

At the conclusion of the Pulse School Pilot, the U.S. Department of Agriculture would determine the program?s effectiveness by measuring increases in student consumption of pulse crops, identifying pulse crops students prefer and determining how pulse crops change nutritional levels in school meals. The Pulse School Pilot is modeled after the successful 2008 Whole Grains Pilot program, which helped the USDA purchase five million pounds of whole grain pancakes and tortillas for schools.

Washington state has 1,000 farm families producing pulse crops and 22 processors employing more than 300 people in Eastern Washington. The value of pulse crop shipments handled via the Columbia-Snake River System reached nearly $50 million in 2011 ? up from just over $30 million in 2001.

Chickpea acreage in Washington state has exploded from less than 10,000 acres in the year 2000 to nearly 80,000 acres in 2012. A main driver of increased demand for chickpeas in the last decade has been increased demand for hummus. Retail sales of hummus are projected to increase to $250 million in 2013, up from $192 million in 2007 and $5 million in 1997. This increase has supported thousands of jobs in Washington state, including 43 at Spokane Seed Company.

The 2013 Farm Bill contains other provisions important to Washington state?s agriculture economy. These include continued investment in specialty crops as well as export promotion programs like the Market Access Program (MAP) and the Foreign Market Access Development (FMD) program, which have helped increase overseas sales of Washington state agriculture products like wheat and wine. Cantwell has consistently supported these programs to help Washington state farmers and producers stay competitive. On July 5, 2012, Cantwell joined Spokane-area wheat farmers to highlight the benefits of the Farm Bill for Washington state wheat research and production.

The legislation would also invest in agriculture research to help lead to the discovery of new ways to increase crop yields and reduce losses from pests and diseases. The Economic Research Service has estimated that for every $1 invested in publicly-funded research, $10 of economic activity is generated.

Washington State University is a national leader in agriculture research and utilizes the Farm Bill?s research investments. The Farm Bill?s Agricultural Food and Research Initiative supports the university?s research to develop varieties of wheat that use less water and grow in more diverse climates. The initiative also supports research into how wheat can better resist ?stripe rust,? a fungal infection that strikes Washington state wheat.

Spokane County has 2,502 farms ? the second highest number in the state. Agriculture in the county generates $587 million in annual economic impact and supports 1,576 jobs. The market value of crops grown in Spokane, Lincoln, Adams, Whitman, and Stevens counties is more than $800 million. As a whole, agriculture is a $40 billion industry in Washington state.

Today, Cantwell was joined by Peter Johnstone, CEO of Spokane Seed; Tim McGreevy, CEO of the USA Dry Pea & Lentil Council and a local chickpea farmer; Andrew Fontaine, V.P. Sales and Marketing for Spokane Seed Co.; and Kim Elkins, Public Policy & Legislation Chair for the Washington State School Nutrition Association.

South Korea shuts more nuclear reactors over fake certificates

By Meeyoung Cho

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea said on Tuesday it was suspending the operations of two nuclear power reactors and extended a shutdown of a third to replace cables that were supplied using fake certificates, threatening power shortages in Asia's fourth-biggest economy.

The government warned there could be "unprecedented" electricity shortages and rolling blackouts this summer due to the nuclear shutdowns. South Korea previously halted the operations of some of its 23 reactors last November after a scandal emerged over parts being supplied using fake documents.

The Asian country is heavily dependent on oil, gas and coal imports, but usually gets about a third of its electricity from nuclear power generation.

"This is a separate case from the last investigation," said Kim Kyun-seop, president & CEO of Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Co Ltd, which runs nuclear reactors in South Korea and is owned by state-run utility Korea Electric Power Corp.

The new case relates to forged documents on cables worth 6 billion won ($5.35 million) provided in 2008, Kim and energy ministry officials said, declining to identify the cable producers.

The reactors, which each have a capacity of 1,000 megawatts (MW), would remain closed for about four months, the government said.

Of the three reactors, two are in Kori, about 320 km southeast of the capital Seoul, and one is in Wolsong, about 280 km from Seoul, the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission said.

A fourth newly built nuclear power reactor, also in Wolsong, which is waiting for operational approval, would also have its cable replaced, the statement added.

The emergence of a new scandal will be damaging for authorities and South Korean President Park Geun-hye pledged at a cabinet meeting a thorough investigation.

The energy ministry said it would ask the international nuclear safety evaluation body Tuv Sud to include the latest case in a review of safety at all reactors, which started this week.

UNPRECEDENTED POWER SHORTAGE

The nuclear problems could increase the risk of power shortages in the hot Korean summer when power demand is seasonally high for air conditioning.

The energy ministry warned the worst shortages could occur in August, and it would consider various measures including rolling blackouts and spreading out holidays to curb demand.

"We expect unprecedented supply shortage this summer as we have to meet power demand while three reactors are halted," said Han Jin-hyun, Vice Minister for Trade, Industry and Energy.

He added power saving measures would be unveiled this Friday.

The energy ministry sees power supply this summer at about 77,000 MW, less than 80,000 MW projected before the closure and short of demand projection of 79,000 MW.

Last year, South Korea was forced to take power saving measures to avoid blackouts after it closed two reactors to replace parts supplied with fake certificates and extended the shutdown of another reactor where microscopic cracks were found.

Anjan Contractor, a senior mechanical engineer at Systems and Materials Research Corporation (SMRC), based in Austin, Texas, received a $125,000 grant from the space agency to build a prototype of his food synthesizer, as was?first reported by Quartz.

NASA hopes the technology may one day be used to feed astronauts on longer space missions, such as the roughly 520 days required for a manned flight to Mars. Manned missions to destinations deeper in the solar system would require food that can last an even longer amount of time.

"Long distance space travel requires 15-plus years of shelf life," Contractor told Quartz. "The way we are working on it is, all the carbs, proteins, and macro and micro nutrients are in powder form. We take moisture out, and in that form it will last maybe 30 years."

Dividing the various components of food in powder cartridges would theoretically enable users to mix them together, like the ingredients in normal recipes, to create a diverse array of nutritious meals.

To prove his idea works, Contractor printed chocolate. Now, he's aiming to build a more advanced prototype to print a pizza, according to Quartz.

The system will start by "printing" a sheet of dough, followed by a layer of tomato "sauce," which will consist of the powder mixed with water and oil. Instead of traditional toppings, the?3D-printed?pizza will be finished off with a layer of protein, which can be derived from animals, milk or plants, Contractor told Quartz.

While NASA sees applications for?3D printers?on future manned space missions, Contractor said his food synthesizer could also be an effective way of addressing the problem of food shortages from rapid population growth.

"I think, and many economists think, that current food systems can't supply 12 billion people sufficiently," Contractor told Quartz. "So we eventually have to change our perception of what we see as food."

The only child of former U.S. President Bill?Clinton?told The Associated Press during a visit to Malaysia that her focus will be on the?Clinton?Foundation's work, especially "related to health, not just in the United States but also around the world."

Clinton?said on the sidelines of a women's conference in Malaysia's main city that she hopes to return to Southeast Asia, specifically Myanmar, where the foundation will work with authorities to distribute medicine and health products, including HIV drugs and child vaccines, at cheaper prices.

Clinton?visited Myanmar earlier this week at the start of initiative to provide water purification packets to areas with unsafe water supplies. Her mother, former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham?Clinton, made a groundbreaking visit to Myanmar in 2011 and helped nudge an elected government toward democratic reforms.

"I hope to go back soon" to Myanmar,?Clinton?said. "My father and my husband are quite jealous now because my mother and I both have been to the country, and they have not."

From Malaysia,?Clinton?travels to Cambodia to launch an effort to slash HIV-related infections and deaths.

"My goal is always to do as much as I can in whatever area I'm working in," she said.

She added that besides the?Clinton?Foundation's initiatives, she was committed to supporting gay rights, including marriage equality.

"It just seems so fundamental to me. I'm able to marry the person I wanted to marry,"?Clinton?said. "That's the fundamental human imperative. Those of us who have been lucky enough should expand these rights to others."

Clinton?often tweets messages supportive of gay rights. Earlier this month, she called it "progress" when France's new gay marriage law came into force and urged her followers to help build "an equitable world for all" while marking International Day Against Homophobia.

Clinton?laughed off a question about whether all the work would leave her time to start a family with her husband.

"My mother asks me that all the time, and anything my mother asks me is fair game," she said.

Pac-12 football: Previewing ESPN, Fox and Pac12Nets early-season broadcast assignments

The Pac-12 is expected to release its early-season broadcast schedule this week. It will include TV assignments and kickoff times, which are of particular interest to fans eager to make travel arrangements ASAP.

Here?s an explanation of the process and preview of what to expect:

*** We?ll get the specifics for games on the weekends of Aug. 31, Sept. 7 and Sept. 14 and possibly the 21st, as well.

The conference will also announce a smattering of mid- and late-season assignments (more on those below).

But the vast majority of games will be left for in-season selections as the networks attempt to retain flexibility for Oct/Nov. It?s not ideal for fans, especially when Homecoming is involved, but it?s in the best interest of TV ratings and, alas, that?s what it?s all about.

*** Before the three networks begin their so-called draft, Fox and ESPN will make four initial selections. (The entire season of Pac-12-owned games is available.)

Fox has already announced it will broadcast Notre Dame at Stanford on the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend, a strong indication that it had the first pick in the four-game draft.

?

Assuming Fox picked first, ESPN owned the No. 2 and 3 selections, with Fox picking the fourth and final game.

And yes, Fox has the right to move Pac-12 games to its new, all-sports network, Fox Sports 1, which is set to launch in August.

*** I have to think ESPN used one of its picks on Stanford-Oregon, a Thursday showdown (Nov. 7) that could very well be the Pac-12 game of the year (and has the added benefit of not conflicting with Alabama-LSU, which is two days later).

But it?s important to note that the four games pulled off the table by Fox and ESPN aren?t necessarily what the networks would consider the four best games.

The process is a bit more nuanced, with value coming into play:

If there?s a weekend with one game that?s vastly superior to the others ? even if it?s not one of the four best of the season ? then Fox/ESPN might grab it.?The fact that Oregon and USC miss each other this fall reduces by one what the networks would consider must-have games.

The initial selections mean that every game available in the so-called draft ? thus every game on the Pac12Nets ? has been initially passed over by Fox and ESPN.

*** Not every game was available for initial selection or the ensuing, three-network draft.

The Pac-12 doesn?t own the broadcast rights to non-conference road games like UCLA-Nebraska and Washington-Illinois (both owned by the Big Ten) or USC-Notre Dame (NBC).

Oh, and the Arizona State-Notre Dame showdown Oct. 5 in Arlington, Tex., counts as an Irish home game. Kickoff is 4:30 Pacific on NBC.

(Please note: When the conference releases the early-season broadcast assignments/kickoff times this week, it could very well include non-Pac-12-owned games that have already been set.)

*** My guess on the initial selections:

1) Notre Dame at Stanford (Fox)
2) Oregon at Stanford (ESPN)
3) Stanford at USC (ESPN)
4) UCLA at USC (Fox)

*** After the four initial selection, the draft began.

The weekly selection order was determined in advance, with the Pac12Nets having the No. 1 pick twice and the No. 2 pick on six occasions?(don?t hold me to that: it might be seven).

The Boise State-Washington duel on Aug. 31 ? the first game in renovated Husky Stadium ? stands as the most attractive game of Week 1, by far.?(USC-Hawaii is owned by the Mountain West and will be shown on the CBS Sports Network.)

If the Pac12Nets have the Huskies-Broncos, it probably came via one of the league?s precious No. 1 picks.

Then again, it wouldn?t come as a complete surprise if ESPN/Fox used one of the four initial selections on that Week 1 showdown.

*** Week 5 ? the weekend of Sept. 28 ? is a big one for television.

It includes Arizona State-USC, Cal-Oregon and Arizona-Washington, any of which would be quality inventory for the Pac12Nets ? especially if the Huskies are a top-25 team at that point.

*** If you?re looking at potential Pac12Nets selections from the perspective of leverage with DirecTV, then it?s probably best to focus on USC and UCLA games ? Southern California is DTV?s home market, after all.

The early-season schedule doesn?t provide the Pac12Nets with any must-have games, in my opinion.

After opening at Hawaii, the Trojans play Washington State, Boston College and Utah State.

The Bruins, who have two byes in the first five weeks, open with Nevada, then visit Nebraska (owned by the B1G) and play New Mexico State.

The first Pac-12-owned, must-have game involving the L.A. schools is Sept. 28, when the Trojans visit ASU.

Then again, if there?s no deal with DTV by that point, the chances of the parties reaching an agreement at any time in 2013 are mighty slim.

Memorial Day: Honoring those lost in battle, those still serving

Around the country today, Americans are observing Memorial Day in different ways ? not all of it just barbecues and ball games.

US Coast Guard veteran Abby Beck took her 7-year old son Levi and other Cub Scouts to place American flags on the graves of soldiers at a military cemetery in Newport Beach, Calif.

"I'm trying to teach him the importance of what we're doing here today, and what it really means to be a veteran and to give your life for your country,? Ms. Beck told the Los Angeles Times. ?We're lucky because of these people."

Jim and Carla Hogan, whose son Marine Corps LCPL Donald Hogan was killed in Afghanistan in 2009 (where he was awarded the Navy Cross, the US military?s second highest honor), are working to build their ?Socks for Heroes? programs.

?In the time period that followed that tragedy, we spent a lot of time with the Marines who served with him. During each of our conversations with these men, we asked them what they needed the most,? they write on their web site. ?Speaking to over 100 field Marines, the answer was uniform: ?Send us socks.??

In two years, ?Socks for Heroes? has sent 196,000 pairs to the men and women in desert war zones, where laundry facilities are scarce.

In Washington Saturday, hundreds of motorcyclists took part in the 26th annual Rolling Thunder ?Ride for Freedom? from the Pentagon to the reflecting pool near the Lincoln Memorial where speakers focused on POW/MIA issues.

Thousands more are visiting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, leaving mementos at the base of the black granite wall, reaching up to trace the name of a battle buddy or loved one ? one of the 58,195 names inscribed there. And at American Legion and Veterans of Foreign War Posts, vets are gathering today for ceremonies, speeches, and parades honoring those lost in military service.

They won?t be marching in Beverly, Massachusetts, however, where the city has canceled its Memorial Day parade. Marching has become difficult for many older veterans, and many younger veterans are first responders working that day, officials say.

It?s also true that there are fewer vets marching in parades across the United States today because there are fewer vets overall.

Since 9/11, it may feel like a perpetual state of war, but it?s a relatively small portion of the US who do the fighting ? or even know somebody who does. Among the nation?s professional and political elite, the figure may be even smaller.

There are exceptions, of course. Former Sen. Bob Dole in World War II. Secretary of State John Kerry and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel in Vietnam. Rep. Tammy Duckworth, who was shot down and lost both legs flying a helicopter in Iraq.

Want your top political issues explained? Get customized DC Decoder updates.

Memorial Day dates back to the end of the Civil War, when it was called ?Decoration Day.?

A special order declared that May 30 should be set aside "for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet church-yard in the land."

Since the end of the draft ? and the end of the very divisive war in Vietnam ? the public attitude toward veterans (and the military generally) has improved greatly. You can see it in the people who gather in the middle of the night at airports to welcome GIs returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Though the wars may not be particularly popular, for most Americans ?separating the warrior from the war? has become a lot easier.

In war and in peace, Memorial Day is meant to remember and honor the many thousands of American servicemen and women lost in armed conflict. In Iraq and Afghanistan so far, that?s been 6,714.

But the situation for war-weary vets returning from a conflict that began when many of them were still school boys and girls remains extremely difficult for many.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI) ? the so-called signature injuries of Iraq and Afghanistan ? continue to affect thousands. Suicide rates are troublesome, as are higher-than-average rates of homelessness and unemployment.

?On this Memorial Day, as we remember those who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces, it is also a time to remember those who served and are still living,? write psychiatrist Harry Croft and retired military officer Sydney Savion, who have worked with thousands of vets, in Forbes online. ?The military members and veterans with physical wounds are easy to spot, but those with the ?invisible war wounds? ? can be just as severely affected.?

Menstrual Phase May Impact Vulnerability to Stress | Psych Central ...

By Janice Wood Associate News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on May 26, 2013

Menstrual Phase May Impact Vulnerability to StressWomen at a particular stage in their monthly menstrual cycle may be more vulnerable to psychological side effects of stressful experiences, according to a new study.

The study?s findings suggest there is a monthly window of opportunity that could be targeted to help prevent common mental health problems in women, according to researchers at University College London.

For the study, researchers examined whether the effects of a stressful event are linked to different stages of the menstrual cycle. They recruited 41 women between the ages of 18 and 35 who had regular menstrual cycles and were not using the pill as a form of contraception.

Each woman watched a 14-minute stressful film containing death or injury, then provided a saliva sample so that hormone levels could be assessed.

They were then asked to record instances of unwanted thoughts about the video over the following days.

?We found that women in the early luteal phase, which falls roughly 16 to 20 days after the start of their period, had more than three times as many intrusive thoughts as those who watched the video in other phases of their menstrual cycle,? said Dr. Sunjeev Kamboj, a lecturer in UCL?s Department of Clinical, Educational and Health Psychology.

?This indicates that there is actually a fairly narrow window within the menstrual cycle when women may be particularly vulnerable to experiencing distressing symptoms after a stressful event.?

The findings could have important implications for mental health problems and their treatment in women who have suffered trauma, he noted.

?Asking women who have experienced a traumatic event about the time since their last period might help identify those at greatest risk of developing recurring symptoms similar to those seen in psychological disorders such as depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD),? Kamboj said.

?This work might have identified a useful line of enquiry for doctors, helping them to identify potentially vulnerable women who could be offered preventative therapies.?

The researcher acknowledges that the study is just the first step.

?Although we found large effects in healthy women after they experienced a relatively mild stressful event, we now need to see if the same pattern is found in women who have experienced a real traumatic event,? he said.

?We also need further research to investigate how using the contraceptive pill affects this whole process.?

Fire breaks out aboard Royal Caribbean cruise ship

BALTIMORE (AP) ? Royal Caribbean says a fire that broke out aboard a ship has forced it to cancel the rest of the cruise and that more than 2,000 passengers will be flown back to Baltimore from the Bahamas.

The cruise line says the fire that began at 2:50 a.m. Monday was extinguished about two hours later with no injuries reported. A cause wasn't immediately known.

Royal Caribbean said in a series of tweets later Monday that executives have met with passengers aboard the ship and that the cruise line is arranging flights for all guests on Tuesday.

It said passengers will receive a full refund of their fare and a certificate for a future cruise.

Ore. teen accused of planning to attack school

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) ? An Oregon high school student is being charged with attempted murder after the authorities say he planned to attack his high school with bombs.

The student, 17-year-old Grant Acord, was taken to a juvenile jail Thursday night after police received a tip that the youth was making a bomb to blow up West Albany High School.

Benton County District Attorney John Haroldson said late Saturday that authorities found six bombs in a secret compartment in the boy's bedroom.

Haroldson said Acord had written plans and checklists, and his intent was "forged and inspired by the model of the Columbine shootings."

Haroldson said the teen is being charged as an adult.

Police found no bombs during a search of West Albany High, which about 75 miles south of Portland.

(AP) ? A pair of rockets slammed into a car dealership and a residential building in strongholds of Lebanon's Hezbollah militant group in Beirut on Sunday, wounding four people in a new sign that Syria's civil war is increasingly rattling its fragile neighbor.

Lebanon's sectarian divide mirrors that of Syria, and Lebanese armed factions have increasingly taken sides in the fighting next door. There was no claim of responsibility for Sunday's rocket attacks, but they struck just hours after Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah vowed to propel Syrian President Bashar Assad to victory.

In Baghdad, Syria's foreign minister offered the first direct confirmation that the Assad regime is willing to take part in talks aimed at ending the Syrian conflict. A U.N.-sponsored conference, envisioned for next month in Geneva, is to bring together representatives of the Assad regime and the Syrian opposition for talks on a political transition.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem said Sunday the government is willing "in principle" to participate in the conference. He added that such talks present a "good opportunity for a political solution for the crisis in Syria," but did not say under what terms Assad would dispatch representatives.

The date, agenda and list of participants for the conference remain unclear, and wide gaps remain about its objectives.

Syrian opposition leaders have said they are willing to attend the Geneva talks, but that Assad's departure from power must top the agenda. Assad said this month that his future won't be determined by international talks and that he will only step down after elections are held.

The foreign minister's statement puts more pressure on Syria's fractured political opposition to signal acceptance as well. The main bloc, the Syrian National Coalition, was meeting in Istanbul for the fourth day Sunday to come up with a unified position on the proposed peace talks, elect new leaders and expand membership.

Louay Safi, a senior member of the coalition, said participants were bogged down in talks about the expansion, and won't be able to issue a formal statement on the Geneva talks until membership issues are settled.

The opposition's Western and Arab allies remain skeptical about the Syrian regime's commitment to negotiations. They have warned Assad that they will step up aid to Syrian rebels if the regime does not negotiate in good faith ? though U.S. reluctance to arm the rebels may have taken the bite out of such threats.

Meanwhile, fighting has continued unabated inside Syria.

For the past week, regime troops and its Hezbollah allies have waged an offensive against the strategic rebel-held town of Qusair in western Syria. They have gained ground amid heavy shelling, but rebels have held some positions.

The Qusair battle has laid bare Hezbollah's growing role in the Syrian conflict. The Shiite militant group, which has been fighting alongside Assad's troops, initially tried to play down its involvement, but could no longer do so after dozens of its fighters were killed in Qusair and buried in large funerals in Lebanon.

On Saturday, Hezbollah's leader firmly linked his militia's fate to the survival of the Syrian regime, raising the stakes not just in Syria, but also in Hezbollah's relations with rival groups in Lebanon.

"We will continue this road until the end, we will take the responsibility and we will make all the sacrifices," he said in a televised speech. "We will be victorious."

Hours after the speech, two rockets struck neighborhoods in south Beirut, a rare occurrence even in a country used to sectarian strife. Street fighting between rival Lebanese groups has been relatively common since the end of the country's 15-year civil war in 1990, but rocket or artillery attacks on Beirut neighborhoods are unusual.

One rocket struck a car dealership in the Mar Mikhael district on the southern edge of the capital, wounding four Syrian workers, according to Lebanese security officials.

After the attack, part of the rocket's main body was left embedded in the ground, where a Lebanese soldier measured its diameter. Two cars were badly damaged and others had windows shattered by shrapnel.

Another rocket hit the second floor of an apartment building in the Chiyah district, about two kilometers (one mile) away. It damaged a living room, but no one was hurt.

Lebanese media said security forces were searching for a third unexploded rocket.

A security official said rocket launchers were found in the woods in a predominantly Christian and Druse area in suburbs southeast of Beirut. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

Earlier this week, a rebel commander threatened to strike Beirut's southern suburbs in retaliation for Hezbollah's involvement in Syria. The threat was made in a video showing Col. Abdul-Jabbar al-Aqidi, commander of the Syrian rebels' Military Council in Aleppo, while apparently en route to Qusair.

"We used to say before, 'We are coming Bashar.' Now we say, 'We are coming Bashar and we are coming Hassan Nasrallah,'" the commander says in the video.

"We will strike at your strongholds in Dahiyeh," he says, using the Lebanese name for Hezbollah's power center in south Beirut. The video was still posted online on Youtube on Sunday.

Hezbollah lawmaker Ali Ammar said the rocket attack took aim at coexistence among Lebanon's numerous sects and claimed the U.S. and Israel want to return Lebanon to the years of civil war. "They want to throw Lebanon backward into the traps of civil wars that we left behind," he told reporters. "We will not go backward."

Interior Minister Marwan Charbel blamed "saboteurs" and said: "We hope what is happening in Syria does not move to Lebanon."

Lebanese Sunnis sympathetic to the Syrian opposition have also been fighting in Syria alongside the rebels. Nasrallah urged both sides to fight for their side in Syria "and leave Lebanon out of it."

The fighting next door has repeatedly spilled over the border. For the past week, Assad's opponents and supporters have been clashing in the Lebanese port city of Tripoli, using mortars, grenades and machine guns to attack densely populated areas.
