Yemen suicide bomber dies in attempt on official's life

ADEN (Reuters) - A suicide bomber killed himself and wounded four others in south Yemen on Saturday in an attempt to assassinate a government official who had targeted al Qaeda militants, a security source said.

The attacker walked up to the parked car of Mohammed Aidarous, who heads a "popular committee" of tribal volunteers who helped the army oust militants from the town of Lawdar in Abyan province this year.

Aidarous, now the local government official in charge of Lawdar, was not in the vehicle but two people in the car and two passers-by were hurt in the blast, the source said.

Yemen has been in turmoil since an uprising against Ali Abdullah Saleh, who finally stepped down as president in February. The Arabian Peninsula state borders top oil exporter Saudi Arabia and lies on major world shipping lanes.

The army has expelled militants from Abyan towns occupied last year. But al Qaeda has struck back with assassination attempts against officials, some successful, and a suicide bombing of a military parade in May that killed 100.

Four members of Saleh's General People's Congress (GPC) were killed in an ambush outside Sanaa on Friday night, the party said on its website. Eight were wounded.

It was not clear if the group was targeted because of its party affiliation. A tribal source in al-Jawf where some of the men worked said the ambush could have been a tribal vendetta.

Saleh remains head of the GPC, which retains half the seats in cabinet. His relatives control key military and security units.

Saleh was succeeded by his deputy Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, who has U.S. backing for a transition process that tries to balance the interests of groups including a Shi'ite Islamist movement in north Yemen, southern secessionists and tribal and Sunni Islamist groups who benefitted under Saleh's rule.

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? A huge crowd filled the streets of Venezuela's capital on Sunday cheering for opposition candidate Henrique Capriles, waving flags in a show of support one week before the country's hotly contested presidential election.

Capriles waved from a truck that rolled through the vast expanse of supporters. The crowd overflowed from Bolivar Avenue, the widest downtown thoroughfare, which according to some estimates has a capacity to hold about 260,000 people. The authorities didn't provide a crowd estimate.

"Bolivar Avenue is too small for us," Capriles shouted to the crowd.

While President Hugo Chavez led a rally in western Venezuela, authorities were investigating the killings of two men in a shooting that erupted during an opposition campaign caravan in western Barinas state on Saturday.

Capriles condemned the killings in his speech.

"On Oct. 7 we're going to defeat violence in Venezuela," Capriles said. "Our country is tired of the violence, of the division, of the confrontation. ... The time of hatred is going to be buried in Venezuela."

Justice Minister Tareck El Aissami said in a message on Twitter that a suspect was arrested in the killings, but he didn't immediately identify him.

Opposition lawmaker Julio Cesar Reyes said on Saturday that a group of Chavez's supporters blocked the caravan and people on both sides were arguing when a gunman appeared and started shooting.

Opposition officials said both men killed were participants in the motorcade of Capriles supporters.

Chavez rallied thousands of supporters during weekend street events in Guarenas, a town east of Caracas, and in western Zulia state.

"It's impossible for us to lose," Chavez said at Saturday's rally in Guarenas. The crowd chanted: "Ooh, Ahh, Chavez won't go!"

People grabbed at red T-shirts that were thrown into the crowd. Some stood on rooftops cheering, and women screamed as Chavez passed.

Yusneidy Rondon, a 26-year-old student, shouted with emotion and danced in the street after getting close enough to hand Chavez a letter.

"Chavez forever. ... I love him!" gushed Rondon, who said that in her letter she had asked the president to provide her with a computer, just as she now enjoys free university tuition.

While Chavez touted his achievements during his speech, he also said "self-criticism" is important and acknowledged that problems including a housing shortage and sporadic blackouts remain.

"There are reasons for many people to be dissatisfied with this government that I lead," Chavez told the crowd. But, he added, "On Oct. 7, it isn't at stake whether the light went out or not... whether they've given me a house or not."

"Those are very important problems and we're working to solve them," Chavez said. "My socialist government is going to continue solving our big problems."

The race is expected to be tight. A recent poll by the Venezuelan firm Consultores 21 put the two candidates roughly even, with 46.5 percent saying they would vote for Capriles and nearly 46 percent saying they would vote for Chavez. The poll had an error margin of 3 percentage points.

Another survey by Datanalisis this month showed Chavez with a 10-point lead over Capriles, while 11 percent of those interviewed didn't reveal a preference.

Addressing the crowd in Caracas, Capriles criticized Chavez for what he called a long list of unfulfilled promises, noting that years ago the president pledged to clean up the sewage-filled Guaire River in Caracas and it remains badly polluted.

"Where's the cleanup? Pure chatter," Capriles told the crowd.

The opposition leader criticized what he called gifts by Chavez's government to other countries, and rattled off a list including a donation to a Puerto Rican music group, a hospital in Uruguay and prefabricated homes in Guatemala.

Capriles' supporters converged on the demonstration by marching down several avenues, blowing horns and whistles. Some chanted: "We see it, we feel it, Capriles president!"

"I'm marching for my grandchildren, for my future," said Segunda Palacios, a retired teacher. "We don't want a tyrant anymore."

She said if Chavez wins re-election, "that would be catastrophic for the country."

RichNSpect ? Save Money By Knowing Your Plumbing System

As many home and business owners know, having to call in a plumber can run into money. But here are some tips that can save money.

? Make Sure the Plumber Is Good

A good plumber who installs a good system is invaluable. Plumbers who cut corners will cause their customers problems in the future, even the near future. Customers can avoid or at least reduce the risk of shoddy work by doing some research before they take on a plumber. They should always have a written contract.

? Don?t Call the Plumber For Everything

A surprising number of plumbing problems can be fixed by the homeowner, even one that look daunting. Before they call in the plumber they should do some research on-line or in home repair guides. Often the only things a homeowner needs to fix a problem is the proper sized wrench, some pipe dope and rudimentary skills.

? Enter Into a Service Contract With a Reputable Plumber

If the homeowner has had a good experience with a plumber who has repaired or installed their system, they might ask if they can enter into a service contract. In these contracts the customer pays a monthly fee and the plumber comes and inspects and troubleshoots their system once or twice a year, or as needed. Major repairs are done at a very reduced cost or even for free. The homeowner will get discounts if their appliances or pipes need to be replaced as well.

? Baking Soda and Boiling Water

Once a month the homeowner should clear the drains with vinegar, boiling water and baking soda. Boil a pot of water. Then, pour a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by a cup of vinegar. Let it bubble for a minute or two, then flush with the pot of boiling water. As fearsome as this sounds, it?s far gentler on pipes than commercial drain cleaners. It?s also good for septic systems.

? Make Sure The Drains Are Used

The homeowner should flush toilets, drains and turn on faucets and shower heads in bathrooms that are seldom used to keep the drains clear. Many vacation home owners are appalled by how clogged an unused plumbing system can get from simply not being used regularly.

? Inspect the Pipes

Though it might be uncomfortable, the homeowner should inspect the water pipes in their attic, basement or crawl space to make sure they?re not leaking. If they?re leaking, the homeowner can probably repair them fairly quickly.

? Know the System

A surprising number of homeowners have no idea how their plumbing system works. For example, they don?t even know or have forgotten where their septic tank is, which can have serious repercussions if the septic system needs cleaning out.

? Have the Right Tools

A homeowner can find out which tools they should have through home repair books and websites. They include wrenches, screwdrivers, plungers, tongue and groove pliers, drain augers, washers and O-rings and the screws that go with them, a valve seating tool, steel hose clamps, pipe clutters, pipe and masking tape, inspection mirrors to see around tight corners, a flashlight, heavy duty rubber gloves and utility knives.

No. 5 Georgia holds off Tennessee, 51-44

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) ? Mark Richt looked past the mind-boggling offensive statistics to find the most important fact for his Georgia team.

When the game was on the line, Georgia made the plays. Even on defense.

Todd Gurley ran for three touchdowns and Keith Marshall added two as No. 5 Georgia recovered after blowing a 17-point lead to beat Tennessee 51-44 on Saturday in the highest-scoring game ever between the SEC rivals.

Georgia (5-0, 3-0 SEC), which had never scored more points against the Volunteers in 41 previous meetings, needed three takeaways in the final six minutes stay unbeaten. Twice Sanders Commings intercepted Tyler Bray's passes and in between the Tennessee quarterback was stripped from behind and the fumble was recovered by Georgia's John Jenkins.

"You can get into statistics, but the bottom line is a lot of games are going to come down to the end where somebody has to make a play," Richt said.

"It's nice to have a gut-check and come out on top."

The Bulldogs' defensive plays in the closing minutes followed a game packed with offense.

The previous high for points in the series was 84 in Tennessee's 51-33 win in 2006. On Saturday, the teams combined for 60 points in just the first half.

Georgia had 282 yards rushing as its two freshmen each topped 100 yards. With former Georgia standout Herschel Walker watching, Gurley had 24 carries for 130 yards. Marshall had 164 yards on only 10 carries.

Asked if he anticipated the high-scoring pace, Gurley said "Probably not."

"We know what we're capable of," said Gurley, who has rushed for more than 100 yards in four of his first five games. "We did our thing. We executed."

Aaron Murray threw two third-quarter touchdown passes to Michael Bennett for the Bulldogs.

Georgia led 27-10 early in the second quarter before Tennessee took the lead with 20 unanswered points.

Tennessee (3-2, 0-2 SEC) took its third straight loss in the series under coach Derek Dooley, the son of Georgia's former longtime coach Vince Dooley.

"We are better in a lot of areas, but we have to shore up the run defense," Derek Dooley said. "Georgia is a great running team but we are a lot better than what we showed out there today. It was frustrating."

Georgia plays at No. 6 South Carolina next week in a key SEC East game.

"We've been able to overcome the adversity we've had to this point," Richt said. "The rest of the season hasn't been a whole lot of drama, but I'm sure there will be drama next week."

Bray moved the Vols inside the Georgia 35 late in the game before he fumbled when hit by linebacker Jordan Jenkins. John Jenkins recovered with 1:22 remaining.

Bray had one more long-shot chance when the Vols took possession with 15 seconds remaining. Commings' interception on first down ended the game.

"Through all the disappointment, I think the team grew a lot," said Tennessee tight end Mychal Rivera, who had three catches for 82 yards.

Bray completed 24-of-45 passes for 281 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. Rajion Neal had 104 yards rushing with a touchdown and also caught a touchdown pass.

Murray completed 19 of 25 for 278 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Murray also lost a fumble.

Entering the day, Tennessee had its most total yards through four games in school history, and Bray's 12 touchdown passes tied for the NCAA lead.

The Vols had 478 yards against Georgia.

Georgia, meanwhile, led the SEC with its average of 47.5 points after topping 40 points in its first four games for the first time in school history.

Following a 30-30 first half, Murray threw third-quarter touchdown passes of 8 and 32 yards to Bennett.

The game was a special teams mess for both sides.

There were three missed extra points, including two by Georgia. The Bulldogs blocked a punt and Tennessee's Derrick Brodus missed a 28-yard field goal.

The Vols' only touchdown in the first quarter came on Byron Moore's 35-yard interception return.

Tennessee capitalized on lost fumbles by Murray and Marshall and other mistakes for 20 unanswered points to take the lead.

Georgia's unraveling began when Malcolm Mitchell allowed a punt by Matt Darr to roll to the Bulldogs' 1. Georgia punted after three conservative running plays, setting up A.J. Johnson's 1-yard touchdown run from the Vols' "Beast" Wildcat formation.

On Georgia's second play, Murray fumbled when hit by blitzing linebacker Herman Lathers. Johnson recovered at the Georgia 8. On third down from the 4, Bray passed to Zach Rogers for a touchdown.

The deluge of mistakes continued for Georgia when Gurley caught the kickoff and stepped out of bounds at the 1. Four plays later, Marshall fumbled when hit by Curt Maggitt. Defensive end Darrington Sentimore recovered at the Georgia 18.

A facemask penalty on Georgia's Kwame Geathers helped pave the way for Neal's 10-yard touchdown pass from Bray for a 30-27 lead.

"I've always believed that this team has some fight in them," Dooley said. "We just had to go out there and prove it. We got hit by a freight train early in the game, but we were able to fight back and get back into it. We went toe to toe with a top 10 team that will be competing for a national championship."

Georgia All-America safety Bacarri Rambo and linebacker Alec Ogletree returned from four-game suspensions. Ogletree led Georgia with 14 tackles.

Mitchell, who started at cornerback in his first three games, started at wide receiver and had four catches for 31 yards.

Goldman sees China's growth slowing to 7 percent for next decade

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - China's economy is expected to grow at a much slower pace of about seven percent over the next decade, but its stock market still has the most attractive upside among "BRIC" countries, according to Jim O'Neill, Chairman of Goldman Sachs Asset Management.

"China is in the early stages of going from a long period where it was all about the quantity of growth, into an era where the focus is on the quality of growth," O'Neill told a news conference in Singapore.

O'Neill, who coined the term "BRICs" to describe the emerging countries of Brazil, Russia, India and China, said markets have not fully factored in the next decade of slower growth for the world's second-largest economy.

That, he said, explains the underperformance of China's stock market.

After three decades of breakneck development that saw annual growth average of 10 percent, China's government is trying to steer growth lower to complete structural economic reforms.

"We're all used to the drug of 10 percent growth and those days are behind us," said O'Neill.

As China makes its transition, O'Neill expects consumer-related and healthcare companies to benefit, while those that depend on heavy industry production and heavy industry commodities were likely to lose out.

Investors are concerned over the timing of China's planned slowdown, as it could be derailed by the global economic downturn that has sapped overseas orders for exports from China's vast factory sector.

China's CSI300 Index <.csi300> has fallen 2.2 percent so far this year, While the MSCI Asia Pacific ex-Japan's <.miapj0000pus> 12.5 percent rise in the same period.

O'Neill said he expected China's A-shares to rise again over the next year, and disagreed with the what he described as a growing consensus that Chinese equities would never rally again.

However, he saw China's economy continuing to struggle in the near term, and said the slowdown in growth may have spread into the July-September period, which would mark a seventh consecutive quarter of slowing growth.

"It's too soon to say a clear recovery is on the way. The Chinese economy still seems to be softening and it's possible that the economy may be weaker in Q3 than it was in Q2," O'Neill said.

"There are not many signs yet of a big easing in financial conditions, which usually is a good leading indicator of momentum."

China is not alone in facing slower growth. Goldman Sachs Asset Management expects all "BRIC" countries, except Brazil, to see lower growth than they did in the last 10 years.

However, their collective share of the world economy will still rise, and O'Neill noted that recent policy reforms that some countries like India and Brazil have introduced are a good sign.

India introduced sweeping reforms two weeks ago, such as raising the price of heavily-subsidized diesel, aimed at shoring up government finances and attracting foreign investment to revive economic growth.

Libya: hundreds demand militias disband in Tripoli

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) ? Hundreds of Libyans held a demonstration in Tripoli demanding the breakup of militia groups and the formation of a national army and police.

The protesters gathered Friday at Martyrs Square at the heart of the capital despite warnings and religious edicts by the country's grand mufti against the protests.

Security forces were on high alert, diverting traffic away from the square and running checkpoints on main roads.

Protesters carried signs that read: "Libya is in trap, there is no army or police." They also chanted: "Where is the Libyan national army?"

The demonstrations recalled rallies last week in the eastern city of Benghazi. Those turned deadly however after some stormed the headquarters of militia groups. Libyan leaders have vowed to disband the "illegitimate" militias while recognizing other pro-government groups.

My fiancee and I have been in this cycle for most of our relationship where things go good, then I mentally check out for some reason and focus on other things and hobbies.
When I do this, over time, she will go and do something to get my attention like chat online with ex boyfriends or start online relationships, and when i find out, I get upset and afraid and try to give her everything she wants, and make her feel comfortable again..
I do love her, and over time my feelings have changed about how I feel.. she is the mother of my 2 children and we have gone through so much together.
The thought of being without her and my kids destroy me..
Most recently, things have turned for the worse and she wanted me to move out so she could have time without me, to find out if she would miss me.. of course i did not want to do that, and have just been trying to do what i can to comfort her, and re-kindle the relationship.
We have not "made love" for at least a month. She still says she loves me, and we kiss and hug. We have been doing lots of talking and just yesterday we were in bed. She had a fever and was sick, and i was taking care of her..
We were talking about various things and she wanted to lay with me in bed.. she said for me not to get any ideas, that she just wanted to be close and lay together.
She made a hot bath before I went to work yesterday, and while I was in there, i asked her if she still wanted me to leave... she said no, that things have been good, and this is what she has always wanted.
What she is afraid of is, things get good again, and she opens up her feelings to me, i will check out again... she is tired of the hurt, and what she has been doing with me the last month or so, and her actions, i believe is what she percieves of how i was to her..
I know there is no such thing as a perfect relationship.
All relationships take work,
There is so much more background history to talk of but dont want to bore anyone yet...
When it comes down to it.. i love my family.. i want a normal life.. i love her.. i just feel like i have been dragged through the coals.. but want to do whatever i can to show her she is the one.

Can anyone chime in? Thanks so much in advance...

Her reconnecting with ex's is not good at all. Really no excuse. That is emotional cheating.

I suggest you guys do His Needs Her Needs together. Do not skip the boundary setting. Needs are not being met and her boundaries are weak. She is using emotional blackmail.

Worse than that there may be a thrid party in your relationship.

Never understood people having kids before they were married but it is common these days. To me this shows less than optimal commitment. Maybe she feels that way.

You say she is your fiance. When is the wedding?

WTF?

Don't marry her, dude.

If she needs to get in touch with her exes each time you guys have a disagreement, cut her loose.

Stop clinging to her like a vine, it's unattractive. You want a different result? Try something different. Don't reward bad behavior.

I agree.. it is..
But I feel she was reaching out for something that she was needing inside from me, things that I was not giving her.. she is very introverted.. she does not talk when she is upset.. she stuffs it inside...

Where can i find this?

What do you mean her bounderies are weak? And could you be more specific when you say emotional blackmail? How exactly?

I think there was to some degree.. as a matter of fact there was.. I do not know how far it went.. but all i can think of is the part that i played in it..

No.. it is not disagreements.. and we have had plenty of those.. i dont want to give the idea that when we have a problem, or a misunderstanding, she waits for me to leave so she can chat up men..

i do agree with the clinging.. but damn.. i feel like i have not been there so many times emotionally, physically..

i do agree with the rewarding of bad behavior.. we have children and have built a life.. what do i do?
i am not trying to cling to her like vine.. but i know i am...

how do i release? and would it be a mistake in the long run?

Anytime anyone cheats it is because they are wanting to meet a need. Does not make it right.

Where can i find this? You can go to the marriage builders website but it is on amazon.com too.

What do you mean her boundaries are weak? And could you be more specific when you say emotional blackmail? How exactly?

Read the book. It explains needs and boundaries. You just said when you do not meet her needs she gets attention from other men. That is emotional blackmail. If you did not have children I would say run away.

I think there was to some degree.. as a matter of fact there was.. I do not know how far it went.. but all i can think of is the part that i played in it..

So your part was as the BF getting cheated on. Not a fun part. So was the affair dealt with?

There is no date.. as a matter of fact.. after i found out about the problems.. i took the ring off... now the ring is back on..

Right. So you guys are just BF / GF with children. No commitment from either side it seems. I get that she was cheating at least emotionally and you took the ring back. So basically you guys are no longer planning to be married.

Jonathan - you have kids and you're jumping into a situation many of here, hundreds, maybe THOUSANDS are suffering to escape from... a partner that is making hers[him]self available to other people?

Are you crazy?

You are lucky you aren't married yet. You are DOUBLE lucky that she's the one that wants out! Your TRIPLE lucky, you've found this place filled with people that are giving you quite sound advise here.

If you're raising your kids as a single father, this is the last thing you need, man. Imagine being married to her, your kids getting attached to her, and then she betrays all of you? What have you done, but brought betrayal into your kids lives when you already have a chance, and a lot of people strongly advising you to... RUN ... while you can.

Good luck.

We have been together for 8 years.. have had 2 children, never married.. why?

I said we needed to get married yesterday.. set a date.. she says we were just thinking of splitting and now we are talking about wedding dates?

She is in the drivers seat.. HOW CAN I FIND THE WAY TO RELEASE... TO BREAK FREE FROM THE FEAR OF LOSS..

i feel like i am holding on way too DAMNED tight.. i know she knows it..

how can i be like i was before when i was confortable.. but, the only other change would be treating her like i feel for her now...

i heard of the 180, dont know much about it.. but can understand the theory.. i dont want to leave, dont want to be without the kids.. dont want this to be a back and forth thing.. i could only imagine how moving out and in could get easier and easier as time moves on.. i want to put my heels in the sand and WORK THIS OUT!! i can forgive her.. she cant forgive me.. she is scared that i will return to being withdrawn if she "gives me what i want"

I dont know what to do...

Okay.. I have a question..

This "withdrawling" of yourself, to focus on your own hobbies, and other things (I assume friends. -ie: Not any cheating)

HOW long of a period of withdrawling is it?? Example.. you focus all on her.. all energies spent on making her happy.. Every day something needed to set her into a smile, etc.

Then.. you decide you want to go fishing for a day, or a weekend...etc?? Then when you get back.. you don't "focus only on making her happy" again. Is that how it goes?

I mean, when you are focusing on your hobbies, is it only a couple days? IF SO, I'd say she is a complete DRAMA QUEEN. If she can't live without being the center of your attention each and every day.. well, She is being completely selfish!. That is no way for a man to show his appreciation for a woman... just because she demands the attention daily.

Even if it was say a week before you focus back on her.. well, I'd think she is being a little unreasonable. You ARE allowed to have a life without her spoon feeding you what your likes/dislikes & emotions "should" be.

On the other hand...If after giving yourself some slight pleasure in your own hobbies... then is it more like week , two, three weeks, before you focus back on her again.. .Before you remember to tell her you love her.. & you spend some extra time with her. Or do something special for her...

Then yes, I could see that being something that would bother me as a wife. However, I think (Hope) I would be strong enough of a person to gently prompt hubby to start letting me know he still thinks I'm special.

Maybe not. maybe I'm too selfish.

But anyway... I wonder at how long of a period this is when you are "mentally checked out". Even with that.. .she is still selfish if she decides to start online affairs instead of confronting you that you are ignoring or neglecting some of her emotional needs. You want a wife with a stronger commitment than that!

NFL, refs?reach tentative deal

Replacements worked first three weeks of games, triggering wave of outrage from fans, teams

Regular?NFL referees, including?Ed Hochuli, are expected to return to the field this week.

By BARRY WILNER

updated 1:47 a.m. ET Sept. 27, 2012

NEW YORK - So long, replacement refs. The NFL's regular crews will be back on the field starting Thursday night.

After two days of marathon negotiations - and mounting frustration among coaches, players and fans - the NFL and the referees' union announced at midnight Thursday that a tentative agreement had been reached to end a lockout that began in June.

Commissioner Roger Goodell, who was at the bargaining table Tuesday and Wednesday, said the regular officials would work the Browns-Ravens game at Baltimore.

The tentative eight-year deal must be ratified by 51 percent of the union's 121 members. They plan to vote Friday and Saturday in Dallas.

"Welcome back REFS," Buffalo Bills running back C.J. Spiller tweeted shortly after the news broke.

The replacements worked the first three weeks of games, triggering a wave of outrage that threatened to disrupt the rest of the season. After a missed call cost the Green Bay Packers a win on a chaotic final play at Seattle on Monday night, the two sides really got serious.

"We are glad to be getting back on the field for this week's games," referees' union president Scott Green said.

The agreement hinged on working out pension and retirement benefits for the officials, who are part-time employees of the league. The tentative pact calls for their salaries to increase from an average of $149,000 a year in 2011 to $173,000 in 2013, rising to $205,000 by 2019.

Under the proposed deal, the current defined benefit pension plan will remain in place for current officials through the 2016 season or until the official earns 20 years' service. The defined benefit plan will then be frozen.

Retirement benefits will be provided for new hires, and for all officials beginning in 2017, through a defined contribution arrangement. The annual league contribution made on behalf of each game official will begin with an average of more than $18,000 per official and increase to more than $23,000 per official in 2019.

Beginning with the 2013 season, the NFL will have the option to hire a number of officials on a full-time basis to work year round, including on the field. The NFL also will be able to retain additional officials for training and development, and can assign those officials to work games. The number of additional officials will be determined by the league.

"As you know, this has to be ratified and we know very little about it, but we're excited to be back. And ready," referee Ed Hochuli told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. " And I think that's the most important message - that we're ready."

Replacement refs aren't new to the NFL. They worked the first week of games in 2001 before a deal was reached. But those officials came from the highest level of college football; the current replacements do not. Their ability to call fast-moving NFL games drew mounting criticism through Week 3, climaxing last weekend, when ESPN analyst Jon Gruden called their work "tragic and comical."

Those comments came during "Monday Night Football," with Seattle beating Green Bay 14-12 on a desperation pass into the end zone on the final play. Packers safety M.D. Jennings had both hands on the ball in the end zone, and when he fell to the ground in a scrum, both Jennings and Seahawks receiver Golden Tate had their arms on the ball.

The closest official to the play, at the back of the end zone, signaled for the clock to stop, while another official at the sideline ran in and then signaled touchdown.

The NFL said in a statement Tuesday that the touchdown pass should not have been overturned - but acknowledged Tate should have been called for offensive pass interference before the catch. The league also said there was no indisputable evidence to reverse the call made on the field.

That drew even louder howls of disbelief. Some coaches, including Miami's Joe Philbin and Cincinnati's Marvin Lewis, tried to restore some calm by instructing players not to speak publicly on the issue.

Fines against two coaches for incidents involving the replacements were handed out Wednesday.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick was docked $50,000 for trying to grab an official's arm Sunday to ask for an explanation of a call after his team lost at Baltimore. And Washington offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan was tagged for $25,000 for what the league called "abuse of officials" in the Redskins' loss to Cincinnati on Sunday. Two other coaches, Denver's John Fox and assistant Jack Del Rio, were fined Monday for incidents involving the replacements the previous week.

"I accept the discipline and I apologize for the incident," Belichick said.

Players were in no mood for apologies from anyone.

"I'll probably get in trouble for this, but you have to have competent people," Carolina receiver Steve Smith said. "And if you're incompetent, get them out of there."

Added Rams quarterback Sam Bradford: "I just don't think it's fair to the fans, I don't think it's fair to us as players to go out there and have to deal with that week in and week out. I really hope that they're as close as they say they are."

They were.

NFL, refs?reach tentative deal

The NFL and the referees' union have reached a tentative contract agreement, ending an impasse that began in June when the league locked out the officials and used replacements instead.

Goodell deserves praise, not scorn

??PFT Live: The man who is taking the most responsibility for the referee lockout is commissioner Roger Goodell. Mike Florio believes that the commissioner is merely taking the blame for the league's 32 owners.

HBT: 'Mutual interest' between Francona, Indians

Yesterday we heard that the Indians had made contact with Terry Francona about their fresh managerial vacancy. The question was whether Francona would truly be interested in an Indians job that presented (a) a rebuild; and (b) less money than he made in Boston. ?To that end, Peter Gammons throws this out there this morning:

Interesting. Sandy Alomar is a fan favorite and, according to some, the favorite among several Indians players. Of course, Indians players probably aren?t the determining factor here given that, as a group, they?ve not won anything and the bulk of them likely won?t be around the next time the Tribe wins anything.

As for Francona, it?ll be interesting to see if he really wants to go into a situation where rebuilding is going down as opposed to taking over a more veteran-laded team seemingly closer to contention. ?Although, given what Baltimore and, to a lesser extent, Pittsburgh did this year, the line between rebuilding and contending is a lot thinner than it used to be. ?That?s probably especially true in the AL Central.

Malaysian Meanders: New Teen Traveler in the Family

My oldest kid turns thirteen-years-old today. Thirteen!! If you had told me when he was born that we would celebrate this milestone in our Malaysian home and traveling the world, I would have laughed in your face. Back then, I had absolutely no intention of leaving Texas and thought we were living in our "forever home."

His first trip, in utero, was to Banff, Canada. As I hiked through knee-deep snow along the Athabasca Glacier, 10-weeks pregnant and recently recovered from the flu, I couldn't help but notice just how extremely tired I was.

He turned out to be a colicky baby and a strong-willed toddler.?At Thanksgiving, we drove?to Houston?for him?to meet his extended family. One of his baby toys was a Winnie-the-Pooh that played a 12-second ditty whenever I squeezed its tummy. The only way to keep our baby calm during the long drive was to continuously play that song over and over (and over and over...) again. My hand was tired! Trips to the grocery store were filled with crying, and grannies would kindly inquire what was wrong with my baby. Back then, I couldn't imagine bringing him on a plane.

When he was 22-months-old, we took our first trip that didn't involve visiting family. That's when we started our balancing act of developing an itinerary that would take into consideration both adults and a child. We made our way through Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Hershey, Pennsylvania. Everyone was pleased with the Hershey Chocolate Factory. He loved Sesame Place, and hubby and I enjoyed seeing historical Philadelphia?? on the Fourth of July, no less.

But one other memory stands out, too. While on our scenic boat tour of Baltimore's Inner Harbor, my toddler continuously attempted to jump overboard. I ended up wrapping my arms and legs around him to keep him on the boat, and he wailed for most of the trip. I'm sure that's not what the other tourist had in mind when they bought their tickets. For a long, long time after that, I wouldn't go on a public tour unless I had an Exit Strategy where I could easily whisk my kid away if his mood went downhill.

?

He celebrated turning five-years-old in San Diego with a trip to LEGOland. For this birthday, he's requested a visit to the newly opened LEGOland Malaysia. That San Diego trip also marks the last time when we weren't slaves to the school year calendar. No more traveling during the off season for us. Luckily, our current school has a long weekend every month.

?

When he was seven, hubby decided we needed to come up with a 10-year plan for summer vacations. I thought this was crazy at the time but have come to see the value in it. We only had a decade of summer vacations left before he started university, and there was so much to see. Our family traveled everywhere from Hawaii to Maine, Florida to Vancouver. The summer of 2011 was supposed to be Yellowstone National Park. A year beforehand, I excitedly booked our rooms with a view of Old Faithful. Instead, we ended up moving to Malaysia and had to temporarily shelve the U.S. version of our multi-year plan. Time to draw up a new one focusing on Asia!

As a new mom, I quaked in my shoes at the thought of family travel. Looking back, there's still no way I would have brought this son along on an international trip as an infant. If it were his little sister on the other hand, she would have had no trouble bouncing around the world as a baby. But parents are a lot like kids. You have to figure out each individual's capacity for being challenged and stretched like a rubber band and know when to stop before it breaks. That point is different for each person. As the years went by, we reached the point where family travel didn't seem like it would break us.??I try to look at myself with grace and know that the mother I was in the beginning couldn't do it, but I eventually grew into a mother who could.

There's a saying that goes, "The days are long, but the years are short." As time has?passed, that colicky baby?grew into a fine teenager who passed me in height months ago. He takes up feats like soaring through the trees and amusement park thrill rides that are more daring than what his mama is willing to try. He can help pack the car and retrieve luggage at the airport. This week, he cooked us a fine dinner and helped his sister study for a test. He even asked to decorate his own birthday cookie cake. My baby is growing up, and I can't wait to continue exploring the world with him.
