Notes to Self : 16*WanderrGirl { *WanderrGirl }

It feels awkward for me to be writing about speaking your mind, because, believe it or not, I used to be a painfully shy and timid girl who barely spoke unless I really, really needed to. Promise, peksman.

I was extremely introverted from the very beginning, and carried around this intense fear of being wrong and/or looking stupid like a permanent backpack. (Plus! I think?my silence was also partly because I had a missing front tooth for the longest time. Bungi!)

I guess we have different reasons for why we?re scared to speak up: for some, it?s lack of self-confidence, or maybe fear of authority, or maybe you just don?t want to create any conflict or ripple in the water. Sometimes, it?s all of that all at the same time.

Recently, I was in a situation where I had to sit down with a person much, much older, much, much more experienced, top-level person-in-authority (now referred to as Person A) and say that a lot of things were so messed up in Person A?s team/organization. It scared the internal organs out of me: I remember thinking, okay, this could only either go really well, or reeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaally bad.

Thankfully, it went well. Person A actually even thanked me for caring enough to speak up and say, ?Hey you?re screwing up, you better get your act together,? rather than just sitting back and waiting for the entire thing to crash and burn.

Different ways YOU can speak up:

IN SCHOOL: Go against a popular but common idea for a project if you know your idea is better and more innovative,
IN THE OFFICE: Speak to your boss when you know that some processes can be done more efficiently, and you believe that what ?has always been done before? isn?t working anymore,
IN LIFE IN GENERAL: Dressing the way you want to without thinking of what others will think is a form of ?speaking up,? too!

At the end of the day, speaking up for what you believe in ? despite going against the popular choice or the people in authority ? shows your conviction and passion. It?s okay to be scared and if your voice shakes ? who doesn?t like a good vibrato? ;)

a little q & a

Do you remember the last time you spoke up about something and felt really good about it afterwards? What do you wish you were more confident to speak up about?

Let me know in the comments below! :)

PS. A big thank you for everyone who has reserved a copy of their 2013 goal-setting planner here! :)
