Fire taxes to go up after Hurricane | WPRI.com

WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) -- Residents in the Misquamicut Fire District have voted to raise their taxes to rebuild from damage caused by Superstorm Sandy.

The Westerly Sun reports ( http://bit.ly/X5wmLv ) that taxes will rise by up to $500 this year to finance about $500,000 in repairs and rebuilding.

At a meeting on Saturday, the district's board presented an option to rebuild and finance repairs. About 200 residents responded.

Meeting moderator Michelle Vacca says Sandy destroyed all beach facilities in the district, including bathhouses, lifeguard chairs, first aid equipment and tennis and basketball courts.

Repairs are planned for bathrooms, a first aid rescue station and septic system repairs. Three-foot high concrete seawalls to halt water surges are planned and lifeguard chairs and equipment also are to be repaired or replaced.
